1967 Southern Cross Rally

G'day

I was wondering if anyone here had some photos of the 67 rally, where barry ferguson won outright, or maybe a link to a good website about it,

I know that there was a 67 rally car at a tasmanian show which I saw in an issue of VWMA but if anyone could help that would be appreciated!

Cheers

Shaun

Hi

Barry is still kicking and I think he still has the 67 rally winning car.

I looked here http://www.rallybugs.com  but no info on Barry is available.

I will be doing research on this once I get to it (chronologically). I have been writing a series of articles on the Redex Trials ('53-'54-'55) for the Club Veedub magazine, and I am currently working on the Ampol and Mobilgas trials of '56-57-58. When I finish that, I will do the Ampol Trial of '64, and then the Rothmans Southern Cross Rally of '67.

I normally go to the Bankstown library and look through the microfiche of the newspapers of the time (you can get hard copies of articles and photos). Also, the NSW State Library in Sydney has every issue of Wheels, Modern Motor and Australian Motor manual (back to the '50s) in their archive, so I will be looking at those too. But it takes time...

As I understand it, VW in Clayton built three of these 'race' Beetles. They were fitted with 1600cc twin-carb engines, front disc brakes, an 80-litre fuel tank and a limited slip diff. Barry Ferguson's one is the only one still existing. In the early 1970s he put it in his shed and forgot about it for 15 years. It was wheeled out and rebuilt to running condition for the first of the 'Bourke to Burketown Bash' runs in 1985 (Barry drove it). Adrian Corvisy of Powertune in Sydney rebuilt the engine. The car was used for a couple more events in the 1980s, and was shown at a couple of VW shows, but since then it has been put back in storage as far as I know. It would be great if it could be put on display at the Nationals - it's an historic Australian VW.

Steve sends Barry a free copy of our club magazine every month, but we never hear anything back from him.

Phil I am not 100% certain but I think Roland Foonk who was our VW service rep at the time was part of the service crew and they did a generator change in an unreal time in the back blocks somewhere in the 67 Southern Cross.

Hi fellas, no I haven't done anything more on this. I have written the text of the 1956 Ampol trial, but not the '56 Mobigas as yet. I have a few raw photos and 16mm movie stills but I haven't organised them.

I have added a paragraph of the '67 Southern Cross to the VW history page, plus a different photo.

http://www.clubvw.org.au/history004

Also since this old 2009 post, all the club magazines (since 2007) are archived on the Club VW site. If you are interested in the Redex trials, download the following issues:

1953 Redex - July 2008 issue
1954 Redex - August 2008 issue
1955 Redex - 5 parts. Download Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec and Jan 2009.

http://www.clubvw.org.au/2008

There's also the story of the Redex / Ampol / Mobilgas / CAMS spat, and an intro to the two 1956 trials, in the April 2009 issue. This is as far as I've gotten so far.

http://www.clubvw.org.au/april-2009

Continuing the Ampol/Mobilgas series is on my list of things to do, but with my daughter now in year 9 with more homework than ever, VW projects seem to be taking a back seat. There just aren't enough days in the week...
