theres nothing to it really
just uses the key in warning chime terminal

71 onwards ignition switches have a terminal marked SU
this powers up as long as the keys in the igntion switch but doesnt have to be turned on
i use it to power my stereo

dunno why they never hooked it up in aus but it sets off a buzzer if u open the door with the key in so u dont lock them in

From your how to, it looks like a 71 ign sw will fit my '68. Always wanted an accessory position. Thanks
Have another question - When I replaced my ign switch some years ago, there were 3 spare cables, 1 grey, 1 grey with a red trace and 1 grey with a black trace. Not sure what they are for but wondered whether they were for wiring the parkers to light up on one side of the car depending on which way you moved the indicator stalk. If my wondering is correct, can you tell us how to connect that up as I reckon that parking light feature is quirky but cool

hulbyw i totally missed your reply somehow

yea the 71-73 ignition switch housings fit 1500 columns
i had a 71 fitted to my 70 1500 beetle but u will need to get creative as theyre a slightly loose fit

71 is the one to go for 72-73 fit but they have a steering lock which is no biggy

no idea what the extra wires would have been for

theres 2 extra terminals on 71 onwards ignition switches
one is live as soon as u put the key in the ignition and the other is live only when the ignition is turned OFF

this runs the key in/door ajar buzzer but only when the ignition is off
ive got a chime module from a mazda in mine to do this

Joel, I know this is a big ask, but do you remeber which model Mazdza you got the chime module out of and whereabouts Mazda fit the module? Lots of Mazda's at Pick a Part but had a look last week and couldn't find any modules, as I didn't know where to look

It was BMW not Mazda sorry
Came out of 99 model E39 but most BMWs from that era have them.

Thanks, I will have a fossick at the wreckers when it stops raining tomorrow. The three wires are a bit confusing though. I guess red is positive and one of the others negative however where does the 3rd wire connect?

They're very simple to wire up, its labled on there + and - and the rest are just T1, T2, T3 etc for all the different tones.
They do a bunch of dings, dongs, beeps etc.
One of my exs had a 318i and the stupid things annoy all the time for a whole bunch of silly reasons.
Its cold outside...ding.... your oils ready for changing....ding.... pass the dutch to the left.....ding

the T terminals need a ground to work

Heres a vid showing how it works.

Thanks Joel. As usual, really helpfull info. Pick a Part only had 1 5 series and a few 3 series however couldn't find a chime module. All cars were fairly well raided. Just have to keep trying at non BMW wreckers as a BM wrecker wanted more than $50 for one.

They clip into the panel under the steering column.

Alot of Beamer owners rip them out cos they're so annoying

I had mine for oil pressure, key in/door ajar and headlight reminder,
the novelty wears off, it's only for headlights now.

If you're not fussed about the tone and just want some sort of warning chime autobahn sell a headlight warning beeper for about $15

I am actually after one for my Beetle and one for an EGT alarm on the 4b. Fitted a Jaycar buzzer to the 4b today but is is fairly awfull. I know only too well how annoying buzzers and chimes can be, particularly in modern vehicles that have them fitted so they can score a higher safety star rating. Thanks again for all your help

A Beetle should not have any accessories. Simple cars.

I've been disproving that for the last decade

Nothing wrong with taking and old classic and bringing it into the 21st century with all the refinement and mod cons of a modern car.

Don't think I could put up with driving an old bug everyday without atleast a decent stereo or good lighting etc

A/C, remote locking, power windows etc are just things we've become so accustomed to having in drab mainstream cars, seems weird without it.

Since the beginning the beetle was always evolving, sure it kept it's characteristic sexy curves but it was always keeping up with the developments of other cars. It was meant to be a cheap car but there were always the extras just like today's cars. Central locking has nowdays become standard on all cars. Had VW Germany kept the Beetle going surely that today all these options would be available at least as extras.

By the way Joel, have you fitted golf headlight switch to your 1303? It's exactly the same but the switch has a plug with a light that lights up the image on the button.

Originally I thought it was a Porsche 944 headlight switch but a check of the part number revealed it is a T25-T3 transporter with the backlighting.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd191/boostedbug/LBug/Dash076.jpg

I do have another with a light inside but it has the normal headlight icon instead of the light bulb like that one.
I checked the part number on it too, it's from a Mk1 Passat.
