MSD 6AL problems
hey dave, me and mike are stumped with my msd 6al..... iv been running it for about 5 months now but never had the limit chip in there as i was
running in the motor....
tonight we tried some of the rev chips to see if it limited it and thats when we struck with an issue, im still waiting for my tacho to come from the
us of a so i dont know the exact revs its pulling but with a 3000rpm chip it feels like its limiting it at about 5200 or so.... either way its revving
waaayyyy past the 3000rpm its supposed to limit at....
tried a bunch of limit chips and checked that they all work with a multimeter.... also the msd is putting out about 7.54v out of the chip plug so it
working too....
im totally stumped and we have no idea why its doing what its doing.... have you had this problem or ever heard of it??? any info would be greatly
appreciated.....
thanks adam

I know I'm not Dave, but have you cut the appropriate wires on the side of the 6al behind the round black plastic cover to let the MSD know it's
working for a 4 cylinder engine? - H

thanks guys, it solved the problem and now works brilliantly..... cant believe it was that simple..... how is it that the car itself ran fine the
whole time and the only thing affected was the limiter?

Adam, the reason the MSD works without a chip is that it fires the coil every time it gets a signal from its trigger.(at this point it doesn't count
the number of pulses)
When you install a chip and without cutting wires, it assumes it is a V8 therefore it counts 4 pulses per revolution. As a 4 cylinder has only 2
pulses per RPM your RPM was double
Also without a chip, there is no RPM limit
By cutting the wires, you are letting the MSD know how many cylinders are firing for each crankshaft revolution
As for the yellow car, thanks for the favourable comments. Took a while to figure out what I wanted as a combination and it isn't quite there yet.
One more T/T is available at WSID on the 5th Sept. before Warwick to which I have already entered. Just need "Bum in Seat" time
