Beetle prices, Standard vs Deluxe


Ive been thinking about this for a long time, over the long run would a original standard poverty model 64 beetle be more valuable than a 64 deluxe beetle? Ive heard that the poverty model were produced in much smaller numbers but is there a real demand for them?

They are an ugly duckling compared to the deluxe, no chrome on bonnet, running boards, dashboard and window rubbers, no glovebox lid, roof lining in the centre only, black gear lever and no fuel guage and silver frosted front bumpers.

Anyway what are your thoughts?

the standard and custom beetles looked terrible...

most of them have had the deluxe bumpers, hubcaps, stainless steel trim, glovebox lid and fuel gauge etc fitted.

I am amazed actually that there are still so many of them left..

they only had the hoodliner covering the top of the roof..
metal below the rear window etc...

but I doubt if they are worth any more...

Two locally owned beetles are both NON Deluxe beetles..

then again.. these aussie made non deluxe models were never sold in the USA...

but whether anyone actually wants a beetle with no interior light....?? or glovebox lid???

From memory we only sold a few,most people spent the extra couple of dollars and got a nice looking bug.I can't even remember how much difference in price was involved.Lee is right most of these bugs are now fitted with the deluxe kit.

from memory it was only a $200 difference when they were new
but then it was $1000 for a ragtop :crazy:

the early standards looked pretty poory but the later ones werent as bad when they started gaining a few items bacl
my mate had a 66 standard and it atleast had a factory glovebox lid

a guy at winterbreak had a very tidy 65 standard forsale
it was all original except for the paint

Original except the paint? Plus the hubcaps, the mirror on drivers door, the chrome bumpers and what else who knows, from the pic.

Complete original standards are very hard to find, most were converted with the deluxe items fairly simply, with the items that just cant be found anymore being lost forever. Even the window rubbers are standard only as is the linings on the seats. Painted hubcaps on the correct car look amazing, just as deluxe gear on Kombi commercials often looks to much, Og painted hubcaps are so much harder to find than chrome ones. The painted interior and lack of head liner can look really simple and without being over the top look quite neat.

As far as wanting something that everyone else in the scene doesnt have, give me a standard standard yes please. With several deluxes and a ragtop and two standards and a euro model beetle all of the era you speak of Will, my mint one owner standard is the one car in my workshop the people fall for,with the euro being second and all comment on its crazy differences. So who knows Will, guess it comes down to personnal taste.

alright u got me.... a couple of minor bits of trim :rolleyes:

point i was trying to make was its just unusual to see one this unmolested
it still has all the coles cafeteria interior in perfect condition

the guy found it in storage where it had been for quite a while, and just reprayed the outside and rebuilt the brakes

It has been for sale for a few months now, from the few, small pictures it looks pretty good value and seems pretty original at first glance. Maybe others can spot things that are wrong?


At the end of the day, what ever car it is you need to own what makes you happy and do with it what you want.


If you want to own an original model that's a bit rare and different to everyone else, something that is a piece of VW Australia history then a standard would make a nice car.



To me personally the Standard models like this represent the essence of the Beetle, a simple, cheap and affordable little, utilitarian car.

well i dont know, but if u can restore or find a bog stock standard beetle that would be sweet, also if u get a custom in my opinion its the rarer of the three as people had them optioned upto their choice so its an individual car... yes alot of ppl got similar upgrades, but they would all be individual in their own way.... but each to their own i guess..... i love my 67 custom and when i go for a stock resto for the next project, im really trying to find a 54 oval..... a split rear screen bug would be my ultimate choice but good luck finding or affording one.......

Yours eddy was the find of the centuary, a real gem.

We have already got a standard beetle, but she is now a baja due to the previous owner slicing the rear end off.

Any original beetle is good enough for me, but i was just wondering if the value and pricing is disimilar compared to deluxe beetles.

Some standard facts


Must admit the Standard does not grab me anywhere. Taking something that was working at the time, dechrome and take away some of the glamour was not a great outcome.
Interesting though they did produce 19180 Model 112 ( Standard) between the release date of 30th August 1962 and May 1968 when the last one came of the production line.
There were some changes to the model over the years but did anyone notice these;

June 1963 Engine lid now has lock
Jan 1964 Chrome side strip added
May 1964 Number plate light housing increased to 10"wide
April 1965 Rolled top seats.

Although discontinued in February 1967 they still assembled them thru to May 68.
128 Standards were produced in 1968

As per attached they were 100 quid cheaper than the Delux and 147 quid cheaper than the Sunroof in 1963

I worked for a VW dealer when the Standard was introduced. The bumpers were painted then, but later they were chromed - word then was that chrome was cheaper than paint in production. It was also rumoured that Standard cost more to produce than the De Luxe!

My first Beetle was a standard, every pay day I would go to the local wreckers and buy deluxe bits for it.

When I turned 30 my wife bought me a 1963 Standard as a birthday present.

Hi Des,

My plans for her are at the moment to get the roadworth done on her, and get a couple of small things fixed. Back guard has a scrape along the length of it, bumpers need to be repainted to original silver, and back seat needs to be restiched along the top. Apart from that she is a straight rust free car and im very happy to own her! :tu:
