Starter Motor question(s)


Hi

I'm sorry if this has already been covered, couldn't find in the search what I was looking for,


Re; starter motors, should they be replaced with a new unit completely? or re-brushed?

What sort of ball park figure is a new 6 volt unit worth?


I haven't queried with anyone yet, just wanted to get an idea of what they are worth and if it is a major job to get it replaced.

I think I would prefer to replace with a new one if I can, then it will last another 45 years without any hassles.


Thoughts?

they can be refurbished and they cost about $100 to $150 to do ,but before you do it take it to a sparkie and get him to test it it could be your regulator

It's not really worth having them rebuilt because parts for the 6V units are morbidly expensive. Unless you want it completely original I would source a new or good condition second hand replacemnet unit.

Thanks guys, do all 6 volt Beetle's use the same starter motor, or is it specifically for the 1200 motor?

Well had my starter motor rebuilt this week,

new starter solenoid, etc etc.. oil changed, tappets adjusted, doors adjusted, few other small issues sorted all for under $500, so I thought that was a good deal.

Touch wood my starting issues have all gone,

It started off maybe 6 weeks ago, where you would go to start it and just get a loud "click" from the starter motor, with no actual engine starting noises, repressing the starter button would then start it.

Gradually the problem has got worse, so you might have to press the starter 10 times for it to start, but it didn't do it all the time, like you might go 10 starts and its all ok, then 4 starts and it would play up.

Do 6v cars have a starter button instead of a key then? Never knew that.

its been added I think at some point after the car left the factory, its hard to see in the photo, but its under the dash there to the right

I've left it as is, also has steering lock, I figure that if someone ever went to steal it, they wouldn't be able to work out how to start it.


the very early Oz Beetles, the 1953 cars use a starter button I believe
not sure what other models have it.

Ah weird!

So is there just an empty hole where the 60's key would usually be? Mines above the ashtray in the middle of the dash.

Yep, just a blank spot,

makes it interesting with all the little differences to a Australian made Beetle,

When I first started really getting into Beetles a few years back, I thought "all Beetle's are basically the same"
But now I find it really interesting, learning about the different changes, things that were only used for x number of years etc..

It sounds like the brushes are worn or the solenoid contacts burnt ,I would send it to an auto electrician for repair and fit a new bush to the transmission housing.Probably also pay to put a new set of contacts in the ignition switch so it worrks from the normal position. I assume this was a personally imported car at some stage as to the best of my knowledge we didn't have this configuration with a steering lock.

Yes,
as far as i know they are all the same, or I should say they all fit..
there were a few different ones used...

I believe the Key switch was installed in the factory as there is NO holes for the ordinary key switch....

as there are no holes for the interior light switches in the Aust made standard and custom beetles.

wherever that beetle was destined to go , maybe thay all had that type of starter switch..
