Noise on acceleration
On my wifes VW, when you accelerate there is a noise right where the gearbox is. It sounds like a piston type motion where one thing is going into
another, like something it loose or worn.
Looking under the 63 beast, it has plastic protectors (not sure if that is what you call them) that stops you from looking at anything unless you take
them off.
Now I am not one to fiddle a whole with cars as I only have a knack for half the job - the bit at taking it all apart.
So with this in mind, and the limited info I have provided, does anyone have any ideas on what it might be or if I need to supply some more
info.
I am planning on taking it to a mechanic but would like to know what I might be talking about.

No its not pinging, it is running OK, it just the noise on the acceleration.

check fan shroud take the belt of and rev it or take a shopt run down the street if no noise ya got ya self a loose fan

I can feel the problem where the gearbox is - as in when it makes a noise - does that sound like a loose fan?
Also the plastic covers under the body, is that something that is fitted or is it standard?

Hi
I just got rid of noise under acceleration in my sons bug, I thought it was the shift rod bush, it was the bolts from the new seat belts touching the
shift rod.

plastic covers under the engine??
not sure What they would be...??
the bush next to the gearshifter in the tunnel are now wearing out allowing the shifter shaft to move...
check under the rear seat - under the centre oval cover..
the shifter shaft connector is under the plate..
loose fan belt will make a noise, although You can usually see it while revving the engine..
loose fan really makes a racket.. also it doesn't stop as soon as You turn off the engine...
Have you checked the oil level in the gearbox??

Lee, the plastic covers are not under the engine but under the body. If I poke my head under the door (was going to say front door....) there is a
plastic cover on both sides of the tunnel that look to be secured into place. Even the tunnel (is this the same as the centre oval?) has a covering
(again, not sure if this is standard or not). I guess the plastic is a covering over the floor pans? I know the floor pans were replaced before I
bought it.
I have not checked the oil level in the gearbox. I am planning on taking it to a mechanic for them to have a look at.
Would you recommend that I take it ONLY to a VW dude or a general mechanic? I realise that you get good and bad from both camps, but a general
viewpoint?

It could be a worn clutch release bearing. Does the noise change when you press the clutch in?

ONLY take it to a VW mechanic...
a good VW mechanic should be able to tell You what the noise is, from experience..
I've seen what "normal" [maybe subnormal] mechanics can do to a VW to fix quite simple problems...
most parts are still available at inexpensive prices compared to other cars...
OK on the plastic covers..
maybe they do this sort of thing overseas to stop stone chips and rust due to the salt placed on icy roads...
but I haven't heard of it being done before...
I used PVA yoga mat under My guards to stop stone chips..
also all around the engine bay to stop noise...
