36hp Challenge – Speed Week 2010
Just announcing what will undoubtedly be a great event next year. A group of keen Volks enthusiasts will be trekking across to Lake Gairdner (a
massive dry salt lake that is just like the Bonneville Salt Flats) to take the 36hp challenge and try to go as fast as possible in a 36hp Volkswagen.
The 36hp Challenge will be part of Speed Week 2010 run by “Dry Lakes Racers Australia” .
Suffice it to say, no one is competing to receive line honours, I just don’t think 78 mph or so will be enough to cut it, but rest assured, if you
decide to join us, you will have a blast and share in life long memories.
A number of different categories exist (basic details listed):
SS (Stone Stock)-Stock 36hp engine with single 28 PCI carburettor
SSS (Super Stock Single)-Modified singleport 36hp engine with single 28PCI carburettor.
DSS (Dual Super Stock)-Pre 1965 period style dual carburetor and non-28PCI single carburetor systems only
K36 (Supercharged/Kompressor)-Any pre-1970 mechanically driven supercharger. Requires any Bosch distributor and coil.
NA36 (NEW AGE)-Any turbocharged or post 1971 supercharger or non-traditional external engine modifications. Nitrous not allowed!
Recently, the first VW to ever run the DRLA Speedweek event, a Super Beetle owned and driven by Mark Hollyoak and powered by a 2180cc VW, posted a top
speed over 117 miles per hour. The annual event will next be run between March 8th and 12th in 2010.
Volks Culture is putting together a team that already includes 5 bugs and a 57 bus, supported by 3 x 1950’s Clipper buses. There are many ways to
get involved, even if you’re not running a car. If you think this sounds like fun, follow the below links for more info, or call Stephen Muller on
0400 356 057 for more details.
