My 1980 Passat Sedan

I just started work doing up my 1980 Passat GLD Sedan (1.5 Diesel) 4 speed. I have just stripped 2 other 1980 sedans so i have heaps of spares. I pulled a 1.6 diesel out of one of the cars I stripped and from what I have found the engine is much better than the 1.5. My plan was to repaint the car and rebuild 1.6D. There was also a 5 speed box floating around that i was keen to grab and use. Although I like the diesel I want something with some go. I am wondering what fuel injected engines are out there that I can use without too much trouble. I'm going to interested in the option of an SR20 (Silvia engine) but need to do some more investigation.

While probably none of this make much sense if anyone has any commments, suggesting, ideas, etc please reply.

Hopefully my next post will make more sense and i should have a couple of pictures of my project.

In my opinion id say the best thing to do is get a 1.8l Golf gti engine and put that in. 83kw at the flywheel

1976 Mk1 Golf 4door, 1.8l GTI engine with big valve head, Spax PSX sprint kit and a single 45mm dellorto DHLA.

How hard is it to track down a GTI engine? If its not too hard to track one down what sort of price bracket would I be looking at?

G'day

G'day, just seeing how it all went, did my engine packing skills hold up to the transport?Oh yeah, sorry about it not having the timing belt cover as I just noticed it was missing as I bolted it down but thats how we got it.

Yeah that probably would be me. I was in the process of cleaning it up to paint it when I found one down near Ballina pretty cheap which was quite tidy but they had done a big end bearing so I picked it up for $400. I put my motor in and drove it for months. i have lost my license for 6 months so i decided to do a full repaint, etc.

Will the passat gearbox fit straight onto the gti engine? Do you know if it will it sit straight onto the existing engine mounts, etc.? Pretty sure I can drop any A1 Series, or A2 Series engine in and the gearbox will bolt straight up, According to this site.

Frog: Does your dad still have the 5-speed he told me about when i bought the passat?

Yep. I'm keen. Whether I just rebuild the 1.6 Diesel or buy a golf engine, I think I need that extra gear.

I wouldn't mind talking with you at some stage in the next few weeks about it. I have a couple of questions I hope you or your old man can answer. Just a couple of things I have been wondering about since I heard about the 5-speed box when I bought the Passat from him last year.
