Whats that (compressor or alternator)
Hi, I was just cruzing around ebay and found this Superbug, with whats looks to be either a compressor (for A/C) or an alternator? (far left of the
picture) I really can't tell, any heres the picture
Also *HERES* the
Ebay link
Im guessing it would be a compressor cause the generator is still there

you really think a convertable bugs gonna have A/C?
nah its an alternator
thats a very early 60s 40hp 1200
what its doing in a Sbug is anyones guess but that was the done way of converting 6 volt engines to 12volt in the 70s and 80s
take the brushes out of the stock genny and let it freewheel with just the fan

Hi
no
that is a common alternator...
and an odd way to do it although cost effective...
I have about 4 of those here including a couple of new ones..
You can pick them up at swap meets for a few dollars...
I have seen it done like that on shooting buggies..
a cheap way out when converting from 6 volt to 12 volts..

The belt can also slip badly cause it is contacting far less of the diameter of all of the pulleys.

We bought a convertible Bug a few years back that had an A/C system in it. (?)
Seemed like defeating the purpose to me.

exactly
my old girl has a pug 206 cabrio with digital climate control, it brings up warnings a/c function may not be effective with roof down
the conversion above isnt to badly done but like smiley said some have really bad placement like this:
it takes alot of HP to spin a vw fan at highway revs and with that amount of belt contact its gonna slip big time
you also need double jointed arms and dislocateable right hip just to put oil in it
