what is this wheel off?
On the top is a 15 x4 VW wheel. (of which I am looking for 2 more)
On the bottom I dunno what it is from. It doesnt have any VW stamp on it. The centre is rivetted on and is a different profile. The wheel face is
stamped deeper, the inner lip is much larger, and it has 4 slots around the it. Also the hubcap clips are a lot thinner. You reckon its VW?

How old is an early splittie? Why did they rivet them instead of welding like a beetle rim?

Maybe whoever made them didn't have one of those new
fangled welding machines??
Remember that the Sydney Harbour bridge is riveted together
and the TITANIC..

Early Bug wheels, in the US and Germany at least, could be welded or riveted(16") and as far as i can tell this depended only on the manufacturer as
there are some welded wheels with earlier date stamps then riveted ones.
I have been told that OZ buses ran 15" rim from 55-67 BUT were they 4" compared to the 15x4.5 US bus rims?
Were OZ bus rims slotted or smooth?
Is there no date stamp on the VW rims(top)?
The bottom two are early ford car or tractor as they used the same pattern for a time.

Some of the American 1940s Fords had wheels like that. That could be one.
They don't quite fit the VW wide 5 pattern.

the Kombis with the reduction boxs [all splitties]
did have slots in them..
I don't have a wheel here at present to say how many... 5 ??
if you would call them slots.. more like when the wheel centres were placed in that position, there are small gaps..
LEE
Those other rims if they aren't the same stud pattern...
then wouldn't be VW... very early fords etc?? have hupcaps very similar design to the domed VW hubcap.. LEE

Did Holden ever have a rim with the "wide" spacing? Can't say I can remember one.

EJ EH holden centres weren't like that from memory...
and they didn't have domed hubcaps like a VW...
the 1948- 215 holden had wheels like that.. 15 inch
and the FJ...
they also had domed hubcaps...

The top wheel is most certainly VW, has the VW stamp. The bottom one is a bit dirty so its possible I could have missed it under dirt and paint but I
dont see any stamp. There isnt much room for one either. I dont think it is a VW the more I look at it. Both wheels are 15", the top one is 4" wide,
the bottom one I dunno.
The bolt pattern is the same as far as I can tell. They bolt up OK so it could only be a mm or two out if I didnt notice.
Ahh shit, now you tell me wheels are date stamped???? Not only do I have to find 15x4's I have to find 1956 15 x 4's? fffaarrrk

The old Ford rims are only slightly different pcd, but they do go on but not a correct fit. By memory they were 15 or 16 and the bolt hole was a
little smaller in diameter.
