77 Campmobile Engine Bay Dust Seals

Hi gang,
2nd post. Got a nice bus to play with and just tidying up a few loose ends before getting it registered.
Bought a new foam engine bay dust seal and will stick it in this weekend.
Anyone done this recently?
Easy job or pain in the arse?
Any hints welcome...
i'm one of these blokes who generally flies in head first and f...ks things up so asking is a real first for me..

New foam seals are well worth installing, along with making sure all the tinware and other seals are in place for summer.
Big thing to look for is replace all old fuel lines, and check the brass tubes the fuel lines attach to in the carbies and fuel pump. These do come out and cause fires!
Easy job on the seal, but is worth removing air cleaner etc for easy access. Simply peel out the old one (be carful and catch all the bits if it falls apart). Fitting the new one is just a matter of folding one side into gap, so you end up with it covering both sides (top and bottom).
There's a bit of debate on which way to install, but I always put the shiny side down, and the join behind the air cleaner.

So does your name imply another vehicle you have?

Thanks guys, I figured it wouldn't be rocket science but i've assumed that in the past to my detriment.
Replaced all the fuel lines and filters, will check the copper pipes though. Good hint.
The bus is sound but has been sitting unregistered for 4 or 5 years in a shed.
Replaced rear wheel cylinders, front calipers were seized and needed freeing up.
Got my mechanic mate to give it a good going over and he found a cracked distributor cap, replaced the rotor, plugs were good, valve clearances were good, timing was good, comressions all between 115 & 120,carb balance was good.
Replaced the tappet cover gaskets.
Got a bloke checking the gas system to certify that, then the 240V system needs checking and we are off to get rego'd.
Just in time for her maiden voyage over Xmas.

Sounds like you've given it a good going over! If it's been sitting that long, have a good look in and around the tinware for stray leaves/dirt etc. Air cooling is not the best in a hot climate, so the better everything is the less likely you will overheat.
Oh, and if you haven;t alreayd done so, new GB oil.

Cool on the Laverda's, which models? My Dad has an RGS1000, and I used to get around on an S2 Ducati. We've mellowed a little and are into BMW's now.

Have you replaced the rubber brake hoses? Also there is a rubber disk at the base of the steering column that quietly perishes over the years! Undo the plate where the column meets the floor and you'll get a look at it. You can also top up the steering box oil while you're there! ;)

Re the Laverdas,
I had a 75 750SF2 which i bought in a million bits and i was attempting to turn it into an SFc replica. Got a fair way through sourcing parts, body kit, pipe, etc and had a rush of blood to the head and sold it.
Regret it now.
The good news is the guy who bought it wanted just that and finished it off so good on him.
I also had a 97 668 Diamante which was a great bike with a dodgy reliability reputation.
Was a good bike for me though.
My brother had a brand new Lav when i was 13 or so and i have been hooked ever since.
Would love a triple of some sort but can't afford a Jota.
Currently riding a Ducati ST-2.
Thanks for the other advice re seals etc.
Replaced the 2 front brake hoses.
Will have a look at that steering jigger.
Regards

Engine bay seals are in.
No dramas really.
All the tin ware was good, only one spot where the gap was a bit tight.
Probably took me 2 hours but i did a few other little jobs while i had the filter box out.
Found a few things need fixing.
Biggest disappointment was disgovering rust under the battery. Gonna need cutting out and replacement.
Thought i'd bought a rust free one.
Bugger!!!!
Plastic lug on the bottom of the airbox has half sheered off so will try getting it plastic welded before i look for a new air filter box.
Got my driving lights working (broken wire) and generally had a good tinker.

All sounds great!!
Rust free kombi? Not sure they exist! There will be more rust, just keep looking, and make sure you protect eveything when you find it. Kombi's have a lot of hidden nooks and double panels, so they rust from the inside out.
Some of the common spots are behind front wheels, in front of rear wheels, bottom of all windows (under seal) around front bumper, drivers foot well.
So you never rode the SF2? What a shame. I'm not up with all the modern stuff, haven't really ridden anything newer than '85. I have only ridden Dad's RGS up and down the street as it's not currently registered, but it will be great to take for a decent spin, the triple's are nice even though te RGS is underpowered (the Jota an Corsa were better).
