Changing from a Generatio to an alternator
Hello,
I have a 70 Kombi and my Geneartor has crapped itself.
I want to go to an 75 amp Alternator instead of replacing the Generator, is this wise? If so what do I need to be aware of? and do I need to swap any
other gear either than the Gen and replace it with the Alernator?
Will there be any performace gains? basically what are the differences between the 2
Any advise is welcome.

No gains...
just fully charged battery all of the time...
If Your engine is one similar to a beetles - 1600..
then you need to change the generator stand to an alternator stand.. they are different..
You may have to change the fuel pump...
depending on what pump is fitted..
if its up against the alternator You will need a late model pump..
The alternator does use the same pulleys but a different sized belt... 11.3 x 912mm
the standard sized type one engine Alternator is 51 amps..
a 75 amp alternator is NOT necessary... just more money..
mick motors in Brisbane sell a kit...
most VW shops who advertise in VWA Magazine should have an alternator...

My engine will look slightly different to Your kombi engine..
I don't have a standard fuel pump so I can't show You that..
All an alternator does is charge the battery more/faster and puts out more power then the generator...
Your Generator has bearings and brushes...
if either of these fail or wear out Your generator just needs an overhaul..
so if You haven't had flat battery problems , Its maybe cheaper to get it fixed...
try an auto electrician for a quote and also get one from a VW shop who advertises in VWA Magazine....
go to the cheapest...

are 70's kombi's upright engines??
Lee is right, its all in a kit. Classicveedub usually have cheap kits available.

they may be flat motors...
in which case You will need to have Your Generator fixed...

Yeah, as far as i know... if its a flat motor you would get it rebuilt..... not 100% there though.
if its a type 1 engine, upright and looks sort of similar... when you change to an alternator, you need to make sure you have an alternator style fuel
pump. make sure you get the right length pushrod for it too, as they are/can be different.
