can I change the size of my engine?


Hello all, this might seem a strange question,but I am new to VW s. I have a 1300 engine and I want to do a rebuild of it,can I put 1600 pistons and pots etc in it to make it a 1600,or do I have to replace the whole thing?some help on this issue would be great. ThanksGary

you would be better off just to buy a reco 1600
cause if your motor is old and you beef up the top , the bottom end will fail.

More than likely it is a 1300 single port

If goinf to twin port isit is also manifolds

Ok thanks,I would have thought that the heads would be the same, but what do I know. I would most likely recon the heads so I can run unleaded fuel. Or is that not worth doing?

you don't normally reco old vw stuff as you can buy everything new these days:no:
the only thing that i kept in my reco motor was the crank and the rods every thing esle was new.

ps when we pulld my motor apart it had cracked heads and case it did have a slight oil leak before, but it still run ok.

does anyone have a rough idea on the cost of a complete recon 1600? Is there anyone in adelaide that can supply one?

I just recoed my 1300 TP and turned it into a 1650.

Rough guess from memory, was bearing, gaskets,1650 kit, cam, lifters, timing gear, oil pump, rocker shafts, fix heads. All up was about $1000. Now just to add new elc dissy, 55 amp alternator and twin carbs.
