fuel filtering
Hi all,
I just changed the fuel hoses as there was a leak. All the rubber bits are now 1/4" and clamped, they were previously the 5mm cloth covered hose and
one of those little plastic fuel filters between pump and carb.
I had been meaning to move that filter for a while now, probably to the gearbox area. I thought I had a new spare filter in my garage. I didn't. As
an experiment (and as a lazy non-mechanic who just needed to get the car running without petrol leaks) I decided to not to fit a filter.
I was wondering if anyone is running without a fuel filter. The filter which I took off and discarded was at least five years old and looked cleanish.
I buy fuel in sydney.
Oh, the car is a 67 beetle.

unless you have a brand new tank and good metal lines you'll be forever removing blocked jets
most of these cheapo replacement fuel pumps dont have built in filters like the original german ones did
and the filter sock in the tanks after 40+ years generally fall apart too

About putting the filter under the tank:
I have come across that option in a few posts while searching around for info.
When I replaced the little hose under the tank, I was thinking what a pain in the back working in that area is. I was operating from the passenger
side, car on jack stands and front passenger wheel removed. It's a fair stretch to get in there.
Am I missing something easy?

on all my bugs it just hangs under drivers side front,
just near brake master cylinder its a lot easier then getting under back of car near hot exhaust and axles
you just pull the hose off from the pipe going into tunnel, put fuel filter on end of hose and add a bit of extra hose from filter to pipe going into
tunnel.
PS make sure you clamp hose before you pull the hose off as fuel will run out.

like ian said just on the drivers side near the master cylinder
i had one of them plastic rock catchers there too
run a metal one now
