Alternatives to Original 2.0L Dual Carb Filters


How is everyone going?
Hope you have a good easter, im having a great easter so far,i have heaps of time(raining) to get in and start stripping one of our kombi's.Whilst checking out the engine,i noticed that the dual carby's use big box style filter.Is it possible to just go back to an aftermarket filter on each carb? We were given only half of the filter box and the Kombi has no key.:crazy:,not the best start to a restoration engine wise.:fakesniff:

yep i have but for the life of me i can't remember what there of,did need to u8se a bi9t of polly pipe to make them fit but had them on or 12 months now all is ok

You could use aftermarket filters I suppose, but the standard VW air cleaner does a lot more than just filter the air. It also ties in with the central idling system, the air pre-heat, the carb fuel mixture balance tubing, the crankcase breather and the carb / manifold vacuum. The left-hand carb has a short pipe from the air inlet horn to the left-hand duct. If you remove it, the central idling won't work. The carb preheat sits straight onto the inlet from the motor's tinware - which will blow hot air into the engine compartment if you remove it. The two carbs are balanced by the thick balance tubing that sits under the air cleaner - it has a vacuum line off it.

VW designed it all to work properly together. Why replace an excellent VW system with a bodgy aftermarket system that won't work properly? VW knew what they were doing. It would be better, and easier, just to locate the standard VW parts you are missing.

What parts are you missing I probably have a couple of spares ?The original system is good and hard to beat.

GREAT POST!:tu::tu::yes:.Thanks mate,i realize that and that is why i am always so hesitant when thinking of changing original stuff.Only have half the unit at the moment,so it isnt running 100% but much better than what i thought it would.At the moment there is stuff missing ,and not in the right spot.So just to.The Dizzy Vaccum Advance goes to the filter box? Im not sure what balance tubing is or what it looks like.i noticed that it has trouble idling,so that pipe may not be on.Air pre-Heat? crankcase breather? :crazy:

I know it sounds pretty bad but the person we bought it off fingered it. I mean they ran it off a jerry-can straight to the carb for a couple years becuase they thought it didnt have a fuel tank.FOR GOD SAKE:grind: all that was wrong was the fuel tank fitting was missing :lol:

We are only just learning about 2.0liters,they are different.lol.So all the info we get is greatly appreciated.Been trying to find a new filter box system to no avail. Would be great if we could get some type of diagram displaying where what goes,.:lol:

OK..SO..you have the box thing in the middle
(what is it called?:lol:) ,then you have the two things that come off the side and go to your carbs.We are missing one of those.Not sure if you need to know left or right or they are the same.Hope that helps.

Ok I will have an inlet tube,which side do you need,the left side has the idle hose set up on it,the right is plain. The vacuum advance goes to the left hand carby near the idle solenoid,the fuel tank breather hose goes to the top of the centre part of the filter.

OK,just went down to the shed.We have the side which has one kinda thick plastic pipe coming from the top of it.Nothing else.So we will need the opposite to that.:lol:It seemed to fit the right side better,but it should be plain according to you.:crazy:
