Single Cab
Hi all
Thinking of selling a 74 Single Cab and wondering what sort of price could be expected as I'm sure you guys have seen them come and go.
I know that the mechanical/body condition is going to determine the price (and you might be thinking i'm asking how long a piece of string is), but
i'll describe as best I can. I'm only after a ball park price range.
It's 1974 VW Kombi Single Cab Ute owned by a volkswagen specialist, converted to 2lt fuel injected engine and a 2lt gearbox (g/b rebuilt less than
1,000ks ago).
No rust, straight body, fresh quality respray, new door trims/rubber seat surrondings from VVDS etc, neat interior, pointless ignition, aluminium
checker plated tray insides, good tyres, nothing to spend, very presentable and strong mechanically.
Any ideas on a reasonable price range?
Thanks,
Steve

A fair question, vwmad. There's a couple of reasons. We're sometimes a bit isolated from the greater australian car market down here in Tassie. He
struggled to sell his last T2 camper for 8500 in Tassie two years ago to find it was then on-sold with relative ease to a Melbourne based buyer for a
11500 a short time after.
I've worked for the guy at his successful vw workshop for the last eight years and although he's had decades of experience in volkswagen mechanical
repairs, engine/gearbox rebuilds etc, and we both own volkswagens, neither of us are up with current used volkswagen market, especially on the
"mainland".
We could tell you vaguely what a 60s-70s beetle and bay window kombi are worth in tassie through the pre-purchase inspections we've done but there
simply isn't the volume of single cabs etc coming through for sale in North Tas. You mainland guys are lucky in that respect!
Thanks for your estimation kroozzn63! much appreciated, as are any others

I've bought a 76 DC for $6500 with reco engine and gearbox. It has had a recent respray and new interior (in the front anyway) but it has some rust
bubbling through. It is otherwise very straight. Also has al checkerplate in the tray, and good original gates.

Being from Tassie I can understand this. It's a bit of a different scene. Especially if you have your head down in your work.
I've been looking around for single cabs (s/cs) for a while over here on the mainland and not seen anything I am prepared to take the plunge on. So
maybe you can benefit from what I have gleaned.
Mint restored they get advertised for 15k plus, depending upon the options fitted. The two sellers of these who were prepared to give me further
details later eventually sold for a bit less though. These guys had dropped a fair bit of money into their buses with full resprays, flash interior
fitouts and premium suspension and tire combinations. As is usual there were also a couple that I have looked at done in a way that didn't appeal to
me. I don't know if these guys sold or took them off the market.
In good/usable condition they seem to be around the 10k mark. For me to clasify them as good/usable they need to be free of rust and mechanicly good.
The first one I looked at had a recent(ish) motor tidyup and had no visible rust I couldn't really tell but it may have been resprayed a few years
back. In hindsight I should have bought that one! I've seen a couple like this advertised in queensland and NSW but havn't been able to get up there
to look.
Needing work: there are a few about and this is the area with the biggest variation in price. Most that are available fall into this category. I could
write an essay on the s/cs I have investigagted in this bracket but the one you are discussing doesn't sound like it fits that description.
anyway! hope that helps |
