Engine wiring harness - 72 Super

A silly question and a curious one!

I just fitted a secondhand motor to my car and forgot to mark the wires to the coil from the harness.
I have connected the black (Ignition) to (+) and fuel cutt off and back up lights.
Green condenser to (-) and the other wire to the oil sender unit.
I have another wire in the harness which is brown and I suspect this goes to the (-) terminal, but can't find this wire in my manuals.
Can anyone with a super help here?

Curious question: This motor came with a red bosch coil (not GT40) and it has some sort of resisitor (looks like a condensor) connected to the (+) terminal. This resistor is connected to the coil mounts. Does anyone know what this thing is and whether i need to connect it?

Tks, Simon

Hi

The brown wire should go to screw on top of the generator.

The condenser looking thing is a noise suppressor for the radio

Thanks Steve. Now I know what the resistor thingy is!!
The brown wire is too short to go to the generator and has a female connector on it. It did come from the coil in the first place. Just reading else where that it could be connected to the diagnostics port in the engine bay. Still a bit unsure if its neg or positive. That said, from what I've read there is usually two leads from the diagnostic port to the coil. On my harness the black ignition wire is also joined to another (i think brown) wire (looks factory) so it could be these two are for the diag port.

I'll keep reading up but hope to start the old girl tonight...

Hi

There are way to many unused wires in the engine bay, brown is always earth on VW, that really throws people used to working on other makes.

You just basically need, power for the coil, oil light switch, the generator should also have a brown earth wire on it, the other wires on the generator are usually easy to work out, the one where the nut can screw all the way off is the round connector, the pronged part circle one goes on the terminal where the nut cant be removed.

its probably the low tension diagnosis lead for the coil

they are usually grey but old age and UV damage turned them a browny colour

if it is it, it doesnt do anything anymore but it lives on the coil neg

Thanks again Steve for a comprehensive answer. I'll connect it to the (-) post on the coil and give it a go.
Ohh, and I'll have the fire extinguisher ready as well.
Wish me luck. She's gotta be all going by the morning for my daughter's birthday or else the wife will give me the ultimatum...it's me or the car!!!

Nice one Joel. You're the "Super" man.
From the wiring diagrams I have see they show it as 13.
This wire corresponds with the diagnostic port wires.

Thanks all for your advice.
