New to bugs but in love already

I was given a 6/72 bug about 3 mths ago and drove it from Sydney to Melb the next dayran like a charm. Got 2 questions tho. I was told that engine should be dual port which it is not. The engine number starts with AE which according a VW workshop manual means is is 1600cc and therefore a dual port intake manifold. The wee beastie has been in the family since 1979 and i am told the motor is original. Could someone tell me how it all works please. The other question is where do i get external trim clips. Thanks all.

Welcome to the VW owners association!

Yes an AE number was a 1600 twin port engine number, 1971-72, so is your engine is original then that's what it ought to be. However it's unusual, after nearly 40 years, for a VW to still have its original engine. But not impossible.

This is a shot of a twin-port engine. You can see the carb in the middle, sitting on the manifold. This divides into two, one side to each head. Then, just before the head, a 'twin port' engine has those aluminium manifold ends that divide into two again. You can see they're attached to the centre manifold with a rubber boot and clamps. This is what your engine should have.

A 'single port' head, as used on 1200, 1500 and early 1300 and 1600 engines, has a one-piece manifold that goes all the way to the heads - no end castings or boots.

You should be able to buy trim clips at any good VW parts supplier. Try Volkspower at Burwood, (03) 9808 6777 - a forum sponsor.

Is the bug an import?
AE is a 70-73 US 1600 engine so how its ended up in aus is strange

True Joel, I couldn't find the AE in my normal engine code file (from ETKA), had to look on US sites to find it. Maybe someone has shipped in a US long block at some stage and fitted it to the car?

Thanks for the info guys. Its a single port head. Dont know about the American part of it. My sister in law bought the vehicle in 1978 and it is still running with the same motor now as it was then. The speedo only says 94000 mls and that is possibly all it has done knowing the driving habits of the previous owners. The original owner was in the army ,as was my brother in law,so he probably didnt do heaps of miles in it either. It has spent all its life in Canberra and Sydney with the odd trip in between. Unless the original owner did a lot of miles in the first 6 years of its life it should be original but it cannot be from what you say.Dont know how to tell whether it is an import or not. It has an Australian compliance plate on it. It is one of the commemerative ones if that makes a difference. While i'm on that subject is there anyway to find out the original serial number for commemerative badge which of course is missing.

if its a 15millionth edition it'll be a 72 superbug
there was 1500 made from memory but i dont think theres any register on them but it would have come out with an AD block originally.

the original could have been damaged in an accident or seized up anything silly like that

there was a 62 beetle in a shed not far from here that had been sitting since it was 6 years old cos the sump plate was hit and dumped all the oil seizeing the engine
sadly it had rusted beyond saving and rats had destroyed the mint interior it had

Joel's right, there were only 1,500 Commemorative Superbugs made for Australian sale. This was an ad from the time.
