Learning Left hand drive.... uhoh now i want a Karmann Ghia
Today was a bit of a first for me
A mate has just brought back a bunch of cars from the US and one is a Karmann Ghia which is one model VW I've never had a chance to drive before
It's got a freshly built hot 1776 in it and i wanted to have a drive to see how it compared to my 1776
Fun part being I've never driven a manual LHD before
I was surprised how easy it is to pick up, through reflex i punched the window winder on the first gearchange but i certainly didnt do that again
geez you get the wierdest looks when you pull up at lights and the person in the car next to you does a WTF double take
makes me want a KG now
theyre totally different feeling to drive to a bug
my only complaint is goddamn they have shitty pedal placement
they are so off center it felt like i had my feet in the passenger side footwell
but with the wide riveras, lowered with front and rear swaybars it cornered like it was on rails, lower center of gravity i guess
aside from the paint showing its age and the drivers seat sagging and stitching coming undone its one of the better unrestored KGs ive seen
just need to convince him to sell it to me now
i did get some dodgy camera phone footage going for a spin i may upload later but heres some crappy camera phone pix

there was a yellow one at goldcoast show a few years back showed me how well a WRX engine fits one
speaking of quick cars
I also went for a spin in one of the others he brought back, 350 cubic inches of penis extension
no fun though with a factory exhaust system
you dont buy a v8 to sound like a grandma

to pass a blueslip it has to lose the all red US tail lights for amber/red ones
Morry reckons type3 ones will fit it, they look the same anyway
it also needs to have new ADR approved seatbelts and headlights fitted

nah sadly he wants to keep it
KGs are rust buckets so to find one like this that isnt plasted back together with bog is a keeper
plus i'd rather an earlier ghia, the fatchick bumpers just dont work for me

Amen mate!
Fattie KG bumpers are horrible. And the tail lights.
I bought my 60 Ghia coupla months ago and I can assure you there are some bargains around that arent bogged up rust buckets.
Just gotta get lucky sometimes

LUCKY THIS GHIA HAS THE TYPE 3 TAIL LIGHTS...
THE EARLIER ONES...1970 CIRCA.
HAD TAIL LIGHTS THAT LOOK LIKE THESE BUT ONLY FIT KARMANN GHIAS... WERE ABOUT 50mm+ SHORTER...
I REALLY LIKE THESE LATE MODEL GHIAS...
THE US headlamps - sealed beams are terrible... plus they dip the wrong way... to the right...
the only other thing is... You have to get in it, via the passenger door... on the Left Hnad side... lol..
cheers
LEE
