Which Ones


This is for people with aftermarket rims on their dub. Ive bought rims for my bug and i am wondering what stud pattern to get my new brakes drilled at. The rims have both 4x100 and 5x100. I know subaru rims are 5x100 and i know Dave Carter has subaru rims on his bug. But i know that there is quite alot of variety for the 4x100.

Im leaning towards 4x100 as i have two other cars with the same stud pattern and can get hold of a space saver spare for it.

What are your thoughts.

Depends what drums and rotors you have

You should have bought blank drums.
If you go 5 stud you need uniform thickness blanks.

If you go 4 stud you can get blank "stock" as they have a 4 way web on the back

The 4 stud blanks may be cheaper - but are probabally brazillian/mexican.
I dont believe these are the quality of blank uniform thickness ones

mines 4x100 atm and if i do it over again im going 5x100

nearly all manufactures have gone 5 stud now due to the inherent strength and better wheel centering ability and theres better range out there

5 stud space savers are easier to pick up than 4

stock brakes will need spot facing before they can be restudded for 4 stud

you dont sorry i meant stock drums/discs if you get them studded for 4x100

it flattens the webbing where the stud seats

mmm... go 5x100, s0o much more variety.
Even toyota rims (well, celica) is that... on some yr models. and all subaru liberties, foresters & rexies etc (as u mentioned). And second hand subaru sets of rims are the cheapest way to get ur hands on a set of 15inch, 16inch or 17inch wheels :P. Dirt cheap and plentiful, + i rekon they look alright.

can even get gold ones if ur keen :) (wrxin' :) )

Does this mean they are all running the same offset as the also plentiful 4x100's you find on loads of the Jap front wheel drive cars?

there's still a huge variety out there in 4x100
nearly every small car from the late 80s to early 00s are 4x100 and the ones that arent are 4x114.3

and nearly every set of 4 stud mags are multistud 4x100 + 4x114.3 anyway
the 5 sets i currently own are

and typically 5 stud multistuds are 5x100 + 5x114.3 so with either you cant go wrong

typical offsets these days on most FWD car rims are between +35et and +55et with a 7" rim which can work with a stock fendered bug

That would require going 5x130 wouldn't it? And then you are restructed to Porsche wheels, which might not be a bad thing, but a little restrictive on choice.

the exact reason i didnt go porsche as much as I'd love a set of turbo twists

theres not exactly a huge range cos 5x130 is porsche and toureg and thats it and then the price.... i can get 3 sets of nice aftermarket 17" rims with good tyres for what once set of porsche with good tyres costs

not to mention the dicky width and offsets porka rims come in unless you like wide gaurds

Twists are also my preferred option, but like you say a bit unrealistic.
I have also heard their offset can affect handling....if you can fit them under your guards.

I already got the rims i want they are in te post and will be at my house tuesday. I just need brakes to mount them too, i think ill go with the 4x100 as i have three other cars in the same house with the same stud pattern

They are just called Boxsters

They were the base wheel that came out in 1997ish
Not that popular as they were 16"
A lot of Boxster owners pulled them and put the bigger 17" Twists on

You can pick them up from $400 without tyres for a set

Okay so rims got here today, gunna get the fronts on first cause can check the fitment easier, will post pics tomoro

i have a feeling the rear is gunna rub on the bump stop stop if that makes sense, i saw somewhere that people grind em back, do people think is this okay?

it is at stock height and will probably stay there for now so wha do you think

whats the width, offset and tyre size?
i doubt you'll have bump stop hat clearance issues on a IRS bug unless they're uber wide or have heaps of positive offset

I've had 18x7.5 on mine with 225/45 tyres and they still cleared the bumpstop hat by 5mm or so with 40mm offset

but its no biggy to grind abit off
i had to on one ofmy other bugs

they are 17x7 with an offset of 48

they are 205/45 17 potenzas

its isnt the rim thats gunna hit it but its the lip of rubber that sits outside the rim itself

Grind away

Have had to do that to mine with the C2 Porsche wheels

Youwill probably have issues with the middle bolt on the spring plate as well
Turn it around so as the head is on the out side and grind it down a bit

on a side note does anyone know if the undersid eof each gaurd is he same on the rear.

Like if i wanted to make a tuckaway exhause for under each side could i just make an opposite of the original
