overkill???
Hi all,
I have a '66 bug with a 1776 it has 36mm dell's ported heads c/w crank, 100 or 110 cam 009 dizzy with petronix and a shitty empi 1-3/8" exhaust
with phat (or should that be crap??) boy muff.
I am looking a getting a new exhaust as I am sick of fixing the exhaust. I have welded it about 6 times as the welds around the muffler break (after
5 weeks) and the car is low and it get caoght on ants and grasshoppers. I am looking at either a 1-5/8" header and hideaway or if the money is there
I would get a sidewinder again in 1-5/8". I am also looking at new carbs, possibly 40 or 44IDF's
Is the 1-5/8" exhaust too big or should I go 1-1/2"??
Also is 44IDF's too large??
I rarely drive the car but feel it could do a little better thsn the 80rwhp it has. Also when it is driven it gets driven fairly hard.
Thanks for your input
Cheers
Ian.

What heads and valves are you running
If you are getting 80HP at the wheels out of a 1776 with stock heads - buy your self a beer
That aint bad at all
Carbs - yeah, upgrade to 40 Dells. 44 Webers or 45 DRLAs if you jet them down (34 vents)
I will be interested in what other say here but i would think the 1 5/8" is too big
I have just made up a 1 3/8" going to 1 1/2" for my stock head 1916
Are you running heater boxes??
If so then you are really limited to a 1 3/8" to 1 1/2" already

Stock valve heads, just ported and polished. and I run heater boxes. I am contemplating going to J pipes as the car is not a dailiy driver so
wouldn't get driven much in winter.
I agree with Colonel mustard, the current empi exhaust is sh#t, poor fit and as i said the weeks broke after 5 weeks.

Loose the heater boxes, and put a merged 1 1/2" system on with 40's or 44's, both can be sorted on your engine but I'd go 40's unless you're
going bigger heads or engine later.

Hi, if the dels are dual barrel 36mm don't replace them with anything bigger, with the cam that have weither it is a 110 or 100 and the standard
valves you will not have the port velosity to give you a good bottom end, you will have a much more driivable car with the smaller carbs with 28mm
chokes and a 1.5" exhaust, drivability is what counts in the real world unless your prepaired to put up with a car that has carbs that are to big for
the engine size
