Engine Oil everywhere..!!
Hi All,
I recently bought a farm type buggy,with a VW engine.
After driving around for only 2 klms,the engine oil started shooting out ,up near the spark plug area.
Oil level got below dipstick markings.
Any thoughts about where to start,after removing those cylinder covers.
I'm told my engine is a later one...all I know is it has a 28 carby.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Could be the oil cooler seals, and the fan is blowing the oil every where, best to get the tinware off and have a stickybeak. Is the oil mostly on the
left as you look at it? And that carb may be a little small for a 1600

Yeah oil cooler seals would be my guess too, but then it would either ooze or mist out... oil cooler is under the shroud on the left hand (#3 & 4)
side of the motor btw.
When you say "shooting out" sound as tho you mean like from a water pistol ??? That would be pretty weird... if it really is doing that I
dunno...
(oh, and altho a bit hard to tell in the pic it looks to have a single port manifold to me, so doubt it's a 1600)

Thanks for the replies.
In the brief time I saw the oil coming out,it appeared to be near the #4 plug or cylinder...(coming up & oozing everywhere).
I have no history with VWs,so am flying blind.
Got the covers off,tightened the heads slightly,tightened the oil cooler mounts slightly,tightened the intake bolts slightly too.
There is oil all over engine,so I can't ID a particular source.
Have I done an oil ring?

It would pay to get a bag o rags from your local supercheap or big w and wipe everything down. run it for like three secs etc or as long as you need
to til you see oil again and pinpoint where its comin from.
Only recently i had issues with my oil cooler leaking and it didnt squirt out but i could wipe the motor down and drive it to school and back and ive
have oil back where i wiped it up from.

Yeah,I'll get it back into running condition & look again.
I tidied the oil up with degreaser & compressed air.

Its most probably a 1300 or 1500 engine...
and it could be the oil cooler or oil cooler seals leaking..

and one point. get to the oil cooler before you buy seals.
Bought some before did mine and were wrong ones comlpletely. but they were the right ones for my year model

How fortunate/unfortunate is this...noticed exactly the same thing this morning. I started the engine and I noticed a very slow ooze coming from under
the shroud just behind the Distributor and is then ran down the corner of the block and dissappeared behind the lower tinware to eventually drip onto
the driveway.
I will remove the tinware and check it out.

Yeah, id say its easier to drop the engine and do it. After doing mine while the engine was in the car and then dripping and stripping the motor form
the 64 it would be heaps quicker to drop the engine.

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies .
I got the old girl fired up enough to show a leaky oil cooler.
I still ain't sure if oil is leaking top or bottom,but I'll get gaskets.There were NO gaskets at the base,but it seemed tightly held.I imagine the
sealing ability was ZILCH!
This engine was only recently bought & installed..& I've noticed a few things which make me think the seller was a *^!@%^*!!
Anyway I bought the old girl ,knowing she had some dramas....
Now,where do I source the gaskets? Should I try making them up?
The local VW agent can possibly get them ordered,but I can't really tell him which cooler type I have...
Also,in my picture....is the number shown an engine ID number?

The gaskets?? are the two small rubber rings (seals) at each hole in the case which line up with the two holes in the cooler. Simple.... just get the
new seals.

I was thinking normal gasket at the base.I wondered how a normal paper gasket would help the sealing sitution.
So I need 2 O rings....
My next step is to clean the cooler up a bit.It has oil all over it.Should I use degreaser,air pressure..or should I leave it alone?
Any suggestions?

If that engine number is original, an 'F' engine number is a 1965 1300cc. However the numbers look knocked on by hand as they are uneven. It could
be an period mid-'60s factory exchange engine using a new case - the VW dealer may have then put the old number on by hand at the time.
No, the oil lines are under pressure and a paper gasket wouldn't seal. Any VW workshop can supply the parts you need - check the forum sponsors, or
buy the VWMA magazine from the newsagent and browse the ads for one nearby. Just ask for VW 1300 oil cooler seals.

Not really an O-ring as these aren't a round section. These are VW specific ones with a rectangular cross section.

Those pics don't really look like leaking cooler seals to me... usually it'd be full of oil and gunk under there as well as down over the barrels
for #3 and #4 cylinders. That is assuming unless you hadn't cleaned it already of course.
If there's oil all over the cooler right up to the top then my guess would be that the cooler itself has sprung a leak, which does happen... it mists
out under pressure and the airflow from the fan means you get a coating of oil everywhere.

Thanks again to everyone for the advice.
I'm unsure about the leak from the cooler.There was oil near the 3/4 area when I originally spotted the problem,plus oil near the base ...which I
cleaned up before taking pics.However,I noticed the top of cooler was also a bit oily....not sure if this was from fan or leaking at top..
I'll try to get some seals & take it from there.
BTW: If the cooler is leaky,is it worth repairing & how is it done?

If the cooler is leaking toss it away and get a new one or you will live to go through this again.PM yoir details and I will post acouple of seals to
