Best-selling beer in Germany

The top 5 best-selling beers in Germany are:

5. Beck's - 293 million litres in 2008
4. Warsteiner - 298 million litres
3. Bitburger - 386 million litres
2. Krombacher - 545 million litres

And the number one beer in Germany is:

1. Oettinger - 661 million litres in 2008

Germany is now only the fourth-largest beer making country in the world, behind China, the USA and Russia.

Then again, like their cars, the Germans do it best.

Oettinger is clearly the best selling beer in Germany just because it's cheap! Even here in Australia it's only $30 a carton, fully imported!

Oettinger is good, but you also have to realize that they have 7 beers in that range and get a total sold of 661 million liters, so divide by 7 and that's less then a 1 million liters each & i m sure it doesn't break down like that, but ..... where as lets say BECKS at 293 million liters is only one beer. (and i don't like becks more than Oettinger)

Forgive me, but i run pubs for a living and i see figures like this all the time from beer company reps trying to flog me products and in the real world of alcohol sales they never stack up.

Beers drinkers claim to be brand loyal & they are to a certain extent ( we all have our favorites) but in the end it usually come down to price.

So in 2008 did Oettinger heavily support the product with promotion & price more than the other beer makers, did they have a retail agreement in place with the large alcohol chain stores, were they offering the big chain stores better rebate for volume sales which will help force sales of the products at the shop level.

all i am trying to say they might be able to claim "best selling beer" but how do they arrive at those figures as liter's sold is not a true measure, as you are not comparing apples to apples, or beers to beers.

I'll get off my soap box now ... sorry

At nearly 40 million, the Corolla IS the best-selling nameplate - just not the biggest selling single design. And Asahi - a girl's blouse Japanese beer - from an Adelaidean, home of Australia's greatest beer (Coopers of course!)

Oettinger is the best selling beer in Germany (passing Krombacher in sales in 2005) because it's designed to be brewed cheaply. Oettinger only sells bottled beer, thus avoiding the 0.25 Euro can deposit fee in Germany. It's hardly ever available on tap in pubs and clubs, and is sold mostly in bottles by the crate in supermarkets and liquor shops in Germany. Oettinger doesn't advertise; there is only one 'Oettinger' brand, albeit in different styles, and there are no third-party wholesalers involved. Oettinger trucks deliver directly to stores.

Production is highly automated, although by law it still has to be made using the German Reinheitsgebot law - barley, hops, yeast and water only (Australian beers can have sugar, preservatives, additives, colours, and all sorts of crap added). However Oettinger is not regarded as high in quality as the more famous German beers. Oettinger boss Gunther Kollmar was quoted as saying (in the Der Spigel magazine, translated) :

"The term cheap beer is actually almost a disqualification. But it's only an attempt. Everything that is marketed well and market adjusted in Germany, is suddenly (called) cheap. Aldi is cheap, IKEA is cheap, the Bild Newspaper is cheap, Oettinger Beer is cheap. Nobody wants it. Yes, it's a gnat's piss! But everybody drinks it. (Our) success proves us right."

Splutter! Coopers Pale Ale (green label) - one of my favourites and can be found on tap in many Sydney pubs over here. Do you mean the Coopers Sparkling Ale (red label) - the famously cloudy golden ale? I thought it was SA's pride and joy. It's funny watching young guys buy a bottle, then try to drink it without disturbing the sediment! I prefer to give it a swirl and mix it up nicely.

I wonder what you'd reckon about what's left of NSW's beers? Tooheys New is rubbish, Country Special isn't made any more, you can't get Reschs DA or Flag Ale any more, and even Reschs Draught is getting hard to find. We have to put up with bloody VB everywhere.

This one was advertised in the paper this week - Big Helga, from Matilda Bay (Redback, Fat Yak). Looks like a German-style beer, might be well worth trying.

I just brew my own. Doing it with good stuff and properly costs about 40 cents a stubby.

Making it cheap and average tasting (like a lot of beer on the market) costs about 30 cents a stubby
