torque wrench (i need one that goes to 220ft lb)
as it turns out mine stops at 150, rear axle nut needs 220ish apparently, anyone got one i could borrow for a lil bit when its got wheels on the
ground again?

i know this sounds like a butchers job, but most people i know use a long bar on the socket and haul down as much as you can it never failed me and i
have been doing back yard job forever

same here,
its swingers that are more critical for correct torque,
your weight on a breaker bar with a bit of pipe should be all you need to get it right

i think a standard 36 mm spanner is about 1 1/2 foot long so if you get some who weights about 80kg to stand on it you will get close to 220 ft/lbs

Hi Dave
I have a 3/4 one I bought at 2nd hand store for $80.00, its a Warren & Brown.
I use it all the time on axle nuts, flywheels etc. You would be surprised how little effort is needed to achieve the correct torque.
Meaning that jumping up and down on a water pipe is probably tightening them too much.
A man of your talents should be able to make up and an extension/multiplier for your existing torque wrench that would double its output.

awwww thanks steve  all good think i have it sorted out now, cant
do it with the car in the air without axles etc either, 150 will do for now just dont let me forget later on

so are you going to do every thing else up to its correct torque or just the axle nuts

I have a 3/4 drive torque wrench that goes to something crazy high like 410 ft/lb, and of course a 36mm socket to suit.
You can borrow if you like when you bring my tie rods around.

More bolts, studs etc. fail because of over-tightening than under-tightening.
However, those rear axle nuts need to be (to use a technical term) "bloody tight", and kept that way, particularly on swing-axles!
Let them get loose and the splines will chew out quick-smart - meaning new drums. Late model axle nuts are a good move, too.

So you don't have to fork out for the torque wrench just weigh yourself and convert into pounds. Now divide 220 by your weight and this is how far,
in feet, you need to stand on the bar from the socket to get the correct torque.
