original owner under impression it is a 1953, is it possible it was bought in late 1953 but is in fact a 1954 as described on plate etc?

The Samba says that chassis number is for a 46-47 model.

I believe back then a 1953 beetle was built in 1953 and sold in 1953 or 1954...
between January and december... in 1953..

Up to the end of the 1955 model year, Beetle chassis numbers had that '1-' prefix. It meant Type 1. It was dropped for 1956-on, as total numbers had reached one million by then. Don't confuse it with the numerical sequence! You have one two many digits to be a '46 or '47 - sorry.

The 1953 model year (January to December) went from 1-428 157 to 1-575 415.
The 1954 model year (January to December) went from 1-575 416 to 1-781 884

So your chassis number - 1-725 696 - is late 1954, as Dave said.

I don't trust The Samba as some of their info is wrong - it's also very US-centric and much of it doesn't apply to Australia. This is a page from a VW Germany engine exchange catalogue from 1975.

What is the MKA number stamped into the body, under the ID plate in the spare wheel well?
