Just did Shazza:

She was made in 1966 but was first registered in NSW 1972

Had 2 owners before me and from 1991 to present was registered private.

Now i wonder wat she did for 6 years reckon Vic Roads or QLD Roads will give me any more info?

I have a feeling she was a Melbourne car as thats where she was made.

Hi

I wondered where Davids bug was before 1991, its a 1974 model.

I bought the car from Dave Becker in urbeckerstan (Nowra) so it may have been a ACT car, as lots of people from the ACT go to the south coast for holidays.

Steve,
i am sure Dave's car was a local car before being traded in, It had NSW rego on it when I drove it home and I had to give the plates back to the dealer when I got it home.

maybe the RTA history isn't that complete?

Hi Dave

The information came back as it having NSW rego from 1991, but in the file they gave me it said date first registered in NSW March 1988. I've sent them an email asking why the information they gave me didn't reflect this.

Well thats almost good. What if I dont have a plate number to give? Why wont they let me search solely with the chassis number?

That's because it isn't complete. RTA records only go back to 1988. As I was advised by the RTA in NSW (when I was looking up the history of my 1965 Beetle), all records prior to 1988 were destroyed as they didn't have the space in their archives to keep all records and they weren't willing to spend the money to digitise those records.

Unless you are able to find someone who knows the history of the car prior to your acquiring it, what you get from the RTA is records from 1988 and up.

Hope this helps

I reckon you have grounds to get your money back steve. It doesnt say anywhere that you would only get records dating back to 88. Ask for a refund.

From another VW forum:

I just did this on my 1963 EH Holden. This car was bought and registered in November 1986 by my father. It says that we registered it in January 1987. It says the car has been registered as a business car up until october 1990, we have never registered it as a business car. It says the car was maufactured in January 1963, the EH wasn't even made until August 1963 and my car wasn't made until November 1963. It says there has been two registered owners yet I know there has been at least three.
Basically, it is a load of rubbish and have demanded my money back!

I may have to ask for my money back as well if it is BS

Best of luck getting any money back from the RTA. It ususally only goes to them, not from them.

If rego was a federal responsibility instead of a state one, all old records would have to be kept, by law, in the National Archive of Australia. I recently got my late grandad's WW2 service history in New Guinea from them (although it cost money to do so),

http://www.naa.gov.au/

I'm amazed that the RTA would be permitted to destroy old records without microfiching or digitising.

Their current records leave a lot to be desired too. According to my Kombi's rego, I have a 253 litre engine. I asked about getting it updated at my last renewal but was told it would need a blue slip, a few new forms and around $60. Bugger that.

Hi

I've recently had two cars engineered for modifications, I needed to get a blue slip for both cars but the change of details at the RTA was free.

I still haven't heard back form the RTA yet.

yeah, I was gonna say when i had my engine number and capacity swapped over to the subi i didnt have to pay RTA squat.

just $18 to my pink slip guy to do an adjustment of records inspection and that was it

Phil that must be some glitch in the system that does that cos the rego papers for atleast 2 of my 1600 bugs had engine capacity down as 181.0

My 1200 shows 147.0 I did speak with someone in the technical side at the RTA and they couldn't give me an answer as to why the capacity is shown as 147.0 only that it may have been a conversion of some sort when they went from imperial to metric.

I don't know, 1200cc is 73.22 cu. in. Although that is almost half of what they have as my engine capacity on my rego slip. Go figure.

Yup!! Any change or modification to what's on the original rego papers now requires a blue slip or road worthiness certicate. This was to crack down on people using stolen engines (not that you're one of them) or carrying out mods to their cars. Even an engineer's certificate on its own doesn't suffice anymore for any mods carried out.
