Sparkplug Recommendations?
Hi All
Just wondering what sparkplugs people are using in their bugs. I seem to be having problems(cylinders missing, dead spark) with NGK B5HS plugs in my
1600tp. I have a standard 1600tp with Kads and Pertronix ignition(putting this in with the new plugs).

W8AC is the one that is recommended and I have used successfully over the past 40 years,NGK's are a good plug in water cooled emgines but I found
they are not as good as the Bosch,also they are slightly longer in the thread and tend to protrude into the combustion chamber. This can often cause
problems on removal after a prolonged service period.

I have always used BOSCH W8AC plugs... [German]
without any problems...
I see a few USA VW shops selling NGK plugs..
and recommended them as the best...??

PS: always buy from a VW shop for the correct plugs...
I have seen auto shops sell incorrect plugs for VWs because they don't carry the correct plugs...

I have only ever used champion in lawn mowers...
always had a bad reputation many years ago...
even though most racing cars have their stickers on them...??

Been using Bosch for ever, W8ac or W8dc (now cc) for type 4 or 043 heads, but now with the new CB heads needing the smaller plug, only NGK available
D8ea , still recommend Bosch if you can. I heard years ago that the Bosch and Beru were the only plugs with correctly formed threads for the Volksie,
rolled as opposed to cut (or something similar).... correct me if I'm wrong.

Matberry I believe you are right regarding the thread formation,I heard this a lot of years ago when I was an apprentice,I think it was from Roland
Founk or Hermann Maher who were our service reps at the time.Their knowledge was unbelievable for an awestruck apprentice.

I heard that as well; the Champion plug itself was OK but its threads didn't quite work with the aluminium VW head. Still, they were very popular
once.

German-made Beru spark plugs are still available too - you can select the right one for your VW at http://www.beru.com/english/produkte/zuendkerzen/ultraxtitan.php Not sure who stocks them here though.

Called in to pick up a set of plugs today, was handed 4 Bosch W8AC, asked the mechanic if there was a better one to use, he just looked at me kinda
funny and said "why would you want something else? these are good quality and work well, their reliable and the best so that's the ones to use"
Guess that settled it for me.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

The number indicates the heat range that the plug is designed for. For Bosch the higher the number the hotter the plug gets to burn off soot (opposite
for NGK). If the plug is too "hot" for your heads it can cause pre-ignition. For a performance motor you would want to go a "cooler" plug if not
going for the factory specified one.

Read / heard somewhere that it is a good idea to use an antisieze on the plug threads, where was that and just what is it (yeah, I know it's to stop
the thread siezing in the head!  ), where is it
available from?

I use copper kote,it is available at marine suppliers or also some of the aftermarket stores Repco etc.
