Is a Split window kombi for $500 pretty cheap?

A best mate of mine has an uncle in SW NSW who has a split window kombi sittin being used as a storage box. I have no pics, no idea of condition, no idea how complete it is, but by the sounds of it, not much rust, and rolling. But none the less, a full resto project.

My mate wants to bring it up to QLD to his dad's workshop in Burleigh as a project, and wants it to be a 'joint venture' project with me. He is aware of my other commitments (including baja and celica) of greater priority along with a family crisis and not much spare time these days.

I will hve to ask for pics, but what i wanted to ask, is whats the average price for a split kombi resto project?

I can understand if its a 'how long is a piece of string' question. I don't know of its late 50's or late 60's. His uncle was going to get a wrecker to pick it up, and they were wanting $200 for it. He also has a beetle in the yard too... don't know of any details of it at all....

any feedback on this would be brillant.

thanks, Chris.

haha, geez that does say alot then john haha. I thought it was a good price tag :).

My mates dad owns a freight company as well, might be able to get it towed. But i don't think they have the exact facilities. I rekon it will take double the price tag to bring it to QLD.

Yea i put my foot down with him in prioritising the current projects.I have heard and seen to many people biting more than they can chew. Hes just thrown this at me as of last week. we have a shed down south to store it for as many yrs as it takes. Its not a worry.

only if there is more steel in it than ferrous oxide. If it has no floor no sills and all the other rust spots I dont see the point of paying that much money. Unless it has 21/23 windows you can sell on ebay.

sounds like a bargain to me. for $500 you can't go far wrong especially if you split it 2 ways.

Lee, you've been spending too much time on ebay/auctionstealer.

Chris, all depends on condition. I met someone at Classicveedub who had bought a kombi of ebay from far north qld, drove up with a trailer to get it and brought it down to Sydney. It needed a hell of a lot of work, basically a new roof and the lower 6 inches replacing.

Hmm... i WISH i could get some photos. Its a pity though, cause his uncle is an old country lad and not up with the tech of internet and digital cameras, or camera phones. None the less, am up for a road trip and will bring a camera. I got 4 weeks holiday coming up and my mate has already offered his passenger seat. IT will take 2 days before i get back home again...

Will leave her in storage till the time is right.

U know? like those annoying guys that pick up the good cars to store them away from other people buying them and restoring them... lol, I HATE THOSE PEOPLE! Cause this feedback sounds alright, and the $500 is coming out my mates pocket, i got nothing to loose but time seeing. Thats 'assuming' the condition is satisfactory.

If its a bucket of crud i should sell it to the poms for $4k? Nah, if we didn't nab it, i'd put it up here, save going to the wreckers.

My mate is just getting into the scene, hes going to valla with me, and hes got a lot of spare time.

Yes, Most have the bottom rusted out front and sides..
but even then, these vehicles are getting harder to find...
and even harder in good condition...

it still may be too much of a job to restore it Yourself..
but someone will....

the rusted parts can still be sourced ... $$

and Steve I meant to say $519.97... lol

hindsight's a bitch
but noone woulda thought 20-30 years that they'd become such a cult classic cos they were such a dime a dozen slow ordinary vans

its like saying now that toyota hiaces will be the next cult classic

bays are going the same way though
it was only back in 2000 that me and another mate off here got a duel cab.
I only wanted the type4 engine for my bug and marcel wanted the 2L box for his project.
it was far more solid than any of the crap you see on ebay now and couldnt even give it away FREE  ended up crushed
now duel cabs are fetching big money in far worse condition this one was in.

Chris, every split needs major rust repairs just as Lee has already said. Unless you have the $$$$$$ or the time/skills to do that, leave well enough alone and FINISH YOUR FREAKIN BAJA FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!
