I know that hte greater the 'rib' kombi box, the better highway speeds you get (without changing ur tyres). 3rib is the lowest ratio and 6 rib is the higher gearing of the three. You trade torque for better highway speeds by upgrading. (lower revs at higher speed)

If you havea 2 litre, then a 5 or 6 rib will do the job because a 6 rib is made for it, although u have less overall torque than your 3 rib, you engine can take it and shouldn't have an issue. Then you would end up with better high way speeds and top speeds.

One would assume to, that the 5 rib and 6 rib would be the stronger boxes of the two, seeing that they are made for the higher power output type 4 motor. and naturally, would have to be stronger to suit :tu:

Is it a kombi or a offroad type 1? What do you use the car for? Just a daily?

i believe the 3/5ribs have gearsets that are made up of beetle parts, or they are interchangable to a degree,

the 6 rib has wider gears, hence its strength, the ribs around the case dont hurt in that aspect either, oh they are a bitch to get your hands on unless you have $$$

wait till dangerous sees the thread, im sure he can answer anything about the 3 :tu:
