Cost quotes and buying new webers... :(
Hi Guys,
Who has bought new webers in recent times?
I am looking locally, US and UK i can get a new WEBER dual twin throat 40mm kit incl all i need in SA for $1000.
But US is $640 (AUS $763 )
or UK 552Pound (AUS $955).
I havent contacted any one about postage costs either or reliability... or am i paying too much... are new webers good? Any one else in AUS you can
reccomend? Thanks

they always want to use the easiest way possible and it always cost heaps geta quote first

Yeha, I'm with Dave... based on things I've got recently, would most likely cost at least $150 US to ship
Check out vwparts.net... their website has a very good shipping calculator on it, and I've never had shipping go over what it quotes (to sometimes
slightly under)
Also Marcus had a pair of Italian 40 IDF's up for sale - see http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=83201&page=1#pid773969
Otherwise, $1000 for a pair of Spanish 40 IDF's sounds about right.

Make sure what they are
The EMPI is HPMX or something like that and a direct copy of the IDF
I "think" you can get new Spanish IDFs still
My opinion is that these are better than HPMX but not as good as Italian IDFs - of which are no longer made
they are still available here in rebuilt form

Be aware what they come with - or dont come with
A lot of the kits come with pretty poor linkages.
Again - my opinion is the CB linkage as a minimum
Even the Redline Weber is not an option for me
also needed to be added in to the cost is what jets and vents they come with
Kiss a couple of hundred good bye if it is all wrong
The Alfa 1750 ones you can ask for what you want

Hi, i have purchased two sets of the redline 44idf weber kits and have had no issue's, i have owned both the italian and the spainish webers and
cannot tell the difference in performance, as for the linkage that is in the redline kit they work well when you set them up correctly, i purchased
mine from thesamba and the seller jetted and choked the carbs to my specs for no extra cost, they ran out of the box and were close to the final tune,
get them sent by USPS and have never been charged for a quote for the freight in 25 years, they will cost about a $100US to post and will arrive in
approx 6-8 days, as for the cost of purchasing them in Australia it does not make economical sense to me, the last set cost $1000AUS landed, the adds
state if they are webers or empi, good luck

About the redline kits,
What were they for? and whats your opiniononthe following.
I want to race my bug, not a daily (not even maybe) and am planning on buying 40mm twins to start with on a standard 1600 then as funds increase hope
to go for 1915... will the 40mm kit be ok on a 1915 or will they be under powered??? and any chance of making 44s run on a 1600 donk???

I run 40DRLAs (Dellorto's) on a 1915
It is more to do with venturi size more than body size but both would come into play - as does heads, valve size and cam choice
I would be buying 40's

Redline kits are fine, mine has been on my race motor since 1995.....and my ragtop has the same kit as well.
Although CB linkages are a better setup.
Here is the redline kit on my Ragtop

Craig... thats hot, is that about $10,000 worth of setup though?
Got any more info on the twin spark setups that pobjoy is running... How expensive is he?
do i spend money on 40mms or 44s????

He is not expensive......compare his labour and machining charges with others and you will be VERY surprised.
If it was me, I would just concentrate on buying parts to go 1916 and just live with the 1600 as is.......40's are not big enough if you are building
a race motor.
