im thinking if you cant find a affordable irs box then converting a swing axle box will propably be out of the budget aswell...keep looking ,one will
pop up....
a wrecker over here in wa has a few in working order.last time he told me he said he wanted $600,offer him less as no ones is realy into the irs bugs
here.but he can be a rip as well. just dont let him know your a learner vw dude..he likes to rip them ones off....itll cost prob a bout $100 to send
to sth oz... vee dub centre , john 0892422808....

If your crown wheel is from a 'later' model that has 8 bolts,('67 and later) you can convert a trans to IRS.
The parts and labour would cost more than a good used box....you need to accurately set bearing preload and backlash.
Anything under $250 is fair for a complete box, but as with anything "used", it will be a lucky draw.
There have been"good" boxes on this forum every so often for half this amount,
but sounds like your budget is going to be your limiting factor.
There should be plenty of VW shops in SA that can quote to do that work and supply the parts.
It is also possible to covert earlier trans'(6-bolt crown wheel),
but it will require the correct hole pattern to be drilled into your 'carrier',
and some side cover machining.

Finally got lucky today guys. Thanks found an AH box Condition unknown but hey it will get me off the ground for now. It came of a 1302 with an AH
code but intestingly it had double spring plates... Does that mean anything??? Anything i need to know/ consider about s box? Might start a new
thread, or can you point me in the right direction?

I think you mean double side plates?
It will have a 4.125 diff, and 0.883 or 0.889 4th gear.
It is just like an IRS version of a 1500 box.
