lead addative?
Hey guys, I've bought myself an Aussie '76 Beetle and I was wondering whether I had to use a lead additive when filling up? Cheers!

No need for addtive for a late model. valves in the later engine heads are designed specifically for unleaded petrol.

VW engines are fine for unleaded from the start of the 70's. You won't even need high octane or premium if your engine is stock. Don't use any
ethanol E10 etc. blend fuels in it though. Ethanol is not suitable for carburettor engines. You need to have a fuel injected engine with O2 sensor to
use and burn Ethanol blends properly.
That said, it wont hurt to put a bit of valvesaver product in the tank once every 10 or 20 times you fill up.

When i filled up at the woolies caltex servo today I noticed they have put stickers on all the bowsers stating that regular unleaded wont be availble
after 27th of next month
I read in the NRMA open road a few months back unleaded will be totally phased out in australia sometime next year

Here is the thing that I have noticed, Is that vw owners don't drive them enough any way, to know what works and don't work in their cars Quote: | Originally posted by OMClarke

We drive our stock 1600TP Beetle daily, racking up about 5000 miles a year. In 5 years (25,000 miles) and only regular 91 unleaded we have been fine.

darn gov are always just after more money. maybe i should just make a plastic fuel tank and run rubber lines through the car and run e10 with a bit
of deisel and some kero and out of date spirits from a close down bar... or maybe I can just use sea water... its pretty much petrol now right?

I'm going to distill the sugar coating from all the election promises we will be getting for the next month.
I'll need a bigger tank!

Hi
what they are doing, is phasing unleaded out and replacing it with what was called E10... now called unleaded with ethanol
Our new woolies and shell and caltex all have only unleaded with ethanol.... so I'm back to 95 or 98 octane RON
My beetle hates ethanol...
and I'm going to start using valve additive now...
ir won't hurt....

No Chris. It is standard 91 unleaded they are talking about getting rid of. 95 and 98 will still be available as they are.

yep 91 will be totally gone as of july 1 next year
Sucks for me cos nearly all japanese cars including Mazda prior to 2005 can't run on ethanol blends so I'm stuck running on premium now and given i
average 30,000kms a year thats over $200 a year difference with todays prices
FCAI claim subarus after 1990 will run on ethanol but im not game to try it with a 35 year old metal tank so i'm stuck running the bug on premium
too
Stupid money hungry government

Hi Chris...
No...
Normal unleaded without ethanol is being phased out in NSW.
other states???
and Woolworths/Caltex are changing over to Unleaded with ethanol 23rd next month.... but will 94 RON
IF they haven't changed over to 91 RON already...
most are selling 91 RON with ethanol now...
so, don't use any ethanol in mowers or boats etc...
but the 95 RON and 98 RON Premium fuels will still be around.
and they will NOT have any ethanol in them...
Not sure on other states???

I can't get over the stupidity of this move to only E10 and premium.
What is the logic behind it? Is there even any logic to it?
Fair enough if ALL cars designed to run on 91ron could take E10, but the simple truth is they cant?

I want to know what's happening on vic. If they aren't doing it I'm getting my petrol over the border!
Don't want to use e10 in my VW, although it would help with it running RICH. Might get it back to just running rich. Can't wait to
