Need some measurements off vw flywheels pls
Hey all, looking at making some flywheel adaptor/spacers to fit Subie flywheels onto vw cranks.
As far as I'm aware there are the type 1 cranks with gland nut and 4/8 dowels and then the type 4 cranks with 5 bolts.
'll be making 2 different adaptors.
Can anyone please give me the measurement of the inside back of the flywheel, from the face that the endof the crank bolts onto, to the face of where
the oil seal sits. Just like in this pic :

How wide is that part of the flywheel 'tube' that comes down and sits on the oil seal? I.D and O.D.
Is this the same or different for the 5 bolt type 4 flywheels?
Thanks heaps dubbers.

Thanks Ernie, that would be great! I managed to get a drawing of a type 1 8 dowel flywheel so I know the depth is 7.5mm, the I.D. is 53mm and O.D
70mm.
Here's the drawing if anyone ever needs one for reference :

Now I just wonder if I make a flywheel for type 1 without the 4/8 dowel holes, can I drill it for the 5 bolt type and for the 4/8 dowel type and use
it on whatever crank?

The back of a type 4 engine is much larger n seal and journal than type 1 by about 5mm.
I will see what I can find.

Type 4 seal surface is 75mm diameter,
the back of the flywheel recess is 58.5mm,
but I do not have the tolerance of a crank, to tell you what type of 'fit' it should be.
The step is 8mm deep, again, I have no tolerance, and this governs the crankshaft 'end float'.
As close as I can measure the PCD is 42mm,
and there are 5 bolts holes of 13mm, which are probably to suit a 12mm bolt?(no wonder the damn things come loose!).
There is a single roll pin hole of 5mm on the same pcd, spaced evenly between two of the bolt holes.
Can't tell you the specs on the O-ring groove,
but anyone who has an O-ring in their posession should be able to measure the diameter for you,
and then you can calclate the specs baseed on the other drawing you found.

Do you have it in a higher resolution? This blurs up too much when I zoom in.

Vewy vewy interesting. Seems the only difference between the types of VW flywheels is the OD of the seal 'tube' is 75mm on type 4/wbx and 70mm on
type 1. (and of course the way they are held on to the crank).
So it seems to me if I made flywheels with a 75mm od and 58.5mm id seal 'tube' they would fit type 4/wbx and I could turn them down to 70mm to fit
type 1 - an easy mod on a lathe. Then drill the centres as appropriate for the crank.
