leaking from input shaft seal
Hey all,
not long after finishing my ej22 conversion in the split my noisy old 1300 irs box started to leak oil bad from the input shaft seal, so i pulled the
motor and replaced the box with a single side plate.
This box seemed nice and quiet and shifted fine, but now after a drive up the coast it started to piss oil out from the same place??
i pulled the motor again this afternoon to replace the seal and found a very sloppy input shaft.
would this be a symptom of a bad adapter plate? as the input shaft seamed fine when i fitted the box and i have been taking it easy.
also would i be wasting my time just replacing the seal in a desperate hope to get it to valla??
cheers,
bob

The input shaft relies on the spiggot bearing to keep it supported. Normally in the gland nut, but can't remember where on your conversion (part of
the adapter?), but check there is correct engagement, if so, replace the seal and good to go .

ok that makes sense, think i may be missing something in my conversion as when i fitted the clutch a found that my old input shaft i use to align
didn't work as it had nothing to seat into? so i just centered it by sight.

Bingo, sfaft needs something to support it, sounds like thats why it's now obviously looser, how was the clutch? Any shudder?

Just check that the new bearing fits on the gearbox shaft before you knock it into the flywheel.
once you get the spigot bearing in it makes it a bit harder to get the motor back in.

It started leaking oil again by the time he got to Valla, he thinks he may of damaged the shaft or input shaft bearing in front of the gear box

Yep had to top up the oil to get home and the clutch was slipping a bit up some of the hills with all that oil on it, but was realy happy with the way
the engine and cooling worked.
I will pull the engine again after the wedding and honeymoon is over and have the box looked at.

ok wedding and honeymoon are all done with, so pulled the engine out again.
looks like it could be the adapter plate as the new inputshaft seal shows obvious wear on one side only.
what would be the best way to check the adapter plate?
cheers,
bob

Hey Bob
i wish i would have read this last week
Just had exactly the same problem
My Adapter plate maybe out to as it shows rubbing on the left side and looks identical to your old one
Just got it registered ,40Min into first drive overheating pulled over Thermostat dident open saw the oil leaking Hopfully overheating problem saved
the box ,As it was built by Dangerous Dave and cost a few pennies.
Does any one know the correct code or sizes for the input seal as have to source in Darwin
Cheers Gaz

Hindsights a bitch
I wish I'd coughed up the extra dollars and got one of Johns kits in the first place.
I went the same one as Bobs first one mainly cos it allowed me to keep my new 200mm HD Exedy button clutch, one of johns would meant my clutch was no
use and I would need to buy a kombi clutch kit
The only problem with Shermans is he uses dodgy old imperial UNC threads, his reasoning is redneck garages out the back of whoop whoop may have bolts
to fix it in a pinch

Yep the unc threads were a pain in the ass, I had to use bolts as I could not find unc studs and the bottom bolt head hit against the side plate so
you couldnt fit it in, but I found a stud in my bolt bin from my old corvair and used that.
All back together now and ready to go, when the rain buggers off!

Hey Bob
So you just bought the adapter plate from Sherman
and not the full kit
When i spoke to him he was not keen to sell just the adapter plate as of the uncertinity of the flywheell i already have.
The full kit is $700
Cheers Gaz

Hey gaz,
He was fine selling me the adapter alone, I just had take sure my flywheel was 700mm
Was 300 for plate alone.
