custom length morse cables?


ok. I cannot describe how over the stock throttle cable setup I am.

where can I get a custom length morse cable (motorcycle throttle) style of thing made up?

I'm near St Marys.

Conwire, near Bankstown airport, make all sorts of special cables, including teflon or nylon lined. I found them very helpful.:tu:

Been thinkin about this myself... to me having a threaded shaft & nut to tension the cable at the engine end should be much better than the stock barrel nut setup.

Interested to hear how you go and what you end up with Pete...

I believe the formula vees use morse cables...

I believe you can get any length and different ends...

The bloke to speak to is John Wright - if he hasn't retired. I've been getting special cables from them over the last 30 or so years, and if you tell them what you want, they will do it - without any hassles. Can confidently recommend them.

I can supply Morse cables and fittings. Available in different lengths, fittings in stainless, spherical ball, clivis or ball joint ends. S/s cable clamps. Fittings for both ends (clamps for outer and ends for inner) around $45, cable around $30 for a standard quality or $50 for the supreme.

Need to order in though. :)

So on a VW how would you do it, run the cable from the front to the back or join it near the transmission to the stock cable? BTW http://www.conwire.com.au

I like the simplicity of the stock set up, but to run a morse cable, it would be from front to rear, the cable length is measured tip to tip (inner). The problem I see with any in my catalogs, is the smallest OD is 11mm for the end ferrule, the OD of the actual bowden tube is 6.7mm and larger. So I guess running it through the og chassis tube is out of the question, but alongside the steel tube may work.
A customer with a buggy brought one for fitting a while back, never made it into the car, but I believe it was meant to fit inside the og steel tube. He had bought it from the US online from a VW shop, but I looked at CIP1 and CB and a few others with no luck.

I'm dissing the whole 1960 throttle linkage. it's totally worn out and prone to getting dust in every part, which is par for the course on a buggy I guess. Not only that, but it's flimsy as. A 60yo nana could bend it, so it's a wonder it's lasted as long as it has under my size 12s at motorkhanas. So it will get a new pedal, probably floor mounted. The cable will come straight off the pedal and then run back along the driver's side and turn round 180 deg to the throttle body. I'm not 100% sure what it will look like at this stage, but I've just got home from ordering the cables. Thanx for the heads up on Conwire. Very helpful and a fast turnaround. I've ordered 2. There is nothing worse than a broken throttle cable in the middle of nowhere.

BTW, my new one is in and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

the car is heaps nicer to drive. I'll take a pic and post it at some stage. The whole setup is VERY simple.

I cut up my factory pedal and made it like the CNC pedal. It's a bit crude but it works very well.

ok, here you go...
should be pretty self explanatory, but basically I cut the bottom off the pedal, used a gate hinge (cheap, strong, easy to find at any hardware store, you get two in a packet so you can replace it easily when the first one gunges up, ie quickly in a buggy). I welded a strap across the back fo the pedal that was bent round with a slot cut to put the ball/pillow end of the cable into. The tab on the tube to the right is where the sheath end is held in place. HEAPS better. Whole setup including 2 cables ($50 each, I got 1 spare) was about $110.

p.s. still needs some paint and a rubber cover. only drama was that it was closer to the brake so I had to take the rubber off that. but I'll sort that out in the future too.
