strange noise from rear axel (bug)
You know the sound when you drag your fingers across a clean polystyrene crate that's used to hold fresh produce? That's the sound coming from the
right rear of my bug. Strangely, it doesn't increase in pitch with the increase in road speed. It disappears at about 40-50kph... any idea what it
could be?
No doubt I'll have to take off my drum to have a look....
Cheers

I'm pretty sure it's wheel/axel/bearing-based. There's no noise when I'm at the lights, so I know it's not the engine or gennie. Besides, the
engine got rebuilt a few thousand KMs ago.
Yeh, it's pretty constant until I hit 40-50kph... sometimes it a *squeak squeak* sound and other times it's a constant *squeeeeak*

doesn't stop when u apply brake?
could be bearing, but usual they are a constant low down rumble when worn, like a noisy road tire, but louder.
I don't mean to be a bearer of bad news, and lets not hope its this, but i have had spun bearings (rather than worn) spinning on the hub that made
that noise. It was a different car, but the dub geometry with bearings and stub axles are pretty much the same in all concept. It was a noise like
that. I would tighten up the axle nut like a psyko and it would stop, only to come back as the hub was just too worn. the surface showed a step was
worn in, and u could see in the metal. replaced the hub with the bearing and it had been brilliant ever since.
That would be worst case senario. Too loose axle nuts are to blame for spun bearings/worn stub axles.
I guess the best bet would be inspection. Pain in the arse though. I take it with ur user name, its an oval... swingers look more troublesome to muck
with, i wouldn't know though, only owned a swinger for a short period of time. Probably best to wait for more opinions before makin a move if its ur
daily driver. But new bearings are cheap anyways... and if its anything like an irs, pretty easy job.

I pulled the rear drum off, and lo and behold, the brake shoe retaining spring (not the return spring) falls out... but no locking cap accompanied it.
So it was 'just' the spring that was getting stuck between the shoe and the drum that was making the noise. Scored the drum a little bit too but fortunately, not too bad. So I bolted the drum back on and took
it for a spin around the block and all seemed well. I've just scrounged a replacement spring, pin and retaining cap for the brake shoe, so I'll
reinstall that and take it for another drive to see if everything is 100%..
