I had a DSE Jaycar kit.. HIGH ENERGY IGNITION SYSTEM..
using a standard coil and points... was fantastic...
engine started first kick.. every time... excellent kit..
it put 32 volts into the coil...
lots of options in it too...
the points only switched it on & off.. never burnt..
until it burnt out... the points had worn down & shorted out... ??
they had a plastic rubbing block... instead of bakelite..
I have a pertronix to put into My New SVDA Bosch dissy and I will either fix the old HEIS or make up another one...
[lucky I had a spare]
the spark plugs could be wider gapped too...

Sounds like you have a mixture problem and those plugs are too cold if you are just low HP normally aspirated.
With boost they are probably OK(depending on HP), but off boost they will prob foul after a time.
I used a stock wasser ignition on my supercharged engine and it worked well to a point,
so any quality modern ignition system should be enough,
provided your fuel mixture are correct.

You may have to tinker with the advance curve,
but the basic electronics are good enough for most things.
They are not classed as a CDI system,
since the trigger just does the same job as the points, ie switch the coil on and off,
but the improved dwell situation does increase coil out put due to more accurate/consistent switching.
If you want more, add an MSD.
...mine was from a 1.9 litre engine...I cant speak about the 2.1's though knowing VW and Bosch, I am sure they are great.
