Safe removing gland nut with rattle gun?
This is probably a dumb question, but is it safe to remove the gland nut with a rattle gun rather than with a breaker bar?
Just concerned if it could potentially cause some internal damage to the crank/bearing and etc.
Thanks
Rob

using a rattle gun on a vw gland is IMO rough and may cause damage to the crankshaft and glandnut

Matt, Is there a reason you dont use a rattle gun on the gland nut - or just personal preferance.

An impact gun can stress the gland nut and crank. May not hurt anything 99 out of 100 times, but when the gland nut fails your engine is lunched. Not
worth the risk in my mind. If you disect a gland nut, you'll see they are quite thin in the wall....easily damaged IMO.

Matt
Good thoughts - I will change my evil ways and buy a thicker breaker bar.

There is a torque multiplying tool you can get fairly cheap for gland and axle nuts, makes life so much easier. Ill find a link....

I don't see any problem undoing the gland nut with a rattle gun.
Putting it back on could be a problem if you over tighten it.
