Anyone running a 5 speed box?
Hi all,
After dropping the engine and box from my 57 Beetle project - found what look like some nasty cracks in the case. Took the gearbox to my mechanic for
proper assessment which I'm still waiting on ...
This has prompted me to consider different options in case the box is no longer usable.
The car is running a 1776 which was recently rebuilt. I've heard of and read about the possibility of fitting a 5 speed box from a Porsche, or
alternatively having a Beetle box modified - using a Gene Berg kit.
As I am a mechanical retard, and somewhat new to this kind of modification, just wondering if anyone has any experience with this type of mod.
I guess I should point out that the car will be used for cruising and is not being buit for drags or track work, but it'd nice to be able to attend
track days for a bit of fun.
I'll try and post some picks of the damage, but they're not great shots.
Any advice appreciated,
Thanks,
Kris.

You gotta have a pretty torquey engine to make a 5 speed worth while
you'll be lucky to see 5th gear with track work, so wasted there and those clever Germans werent silly when they designed the stock gearing.
A stock superbug will cruise all day long at 80mph in 4th, last time i checked our speedlimits werent that high
Some people strike over heating problems with a 5th gear on stock and mild engines
You're increasing the load on the engine at the same time as slowing the cooling fan,

nothing wrong with a old vw box.
I run a old bug in my turbo bug and we still use the 6volt 58 box in our 58 fun drag car
