Cleaning headliner, how to go about it.
Hey guys.. Well as stated above .
Got some mold or something aroud the edges of the headliner in the old girl and want to clean it up.. Its in extramly good condition so dont want to
reck it..
How have you guys gone about it ?

Well sugar soap is the best for mould. It cleans it straight off. I've never used it on a headliner. But I assume it would be ok.

It may not be mould, I had the same problem on an old Morris I once had, turned out to be discolouring from the material on the back of the roof
liner, back then I found it impossible to remove. You may have to recolour the whole liner, there's some good stuff on the market these days for that
sort of thing (not back then) try a boot maker for shoe recolouring product maybe.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

Its just age staining, they all get it
It scrubs out a bit but not completely
If your headliners in good nick otherwise its not hard to give it a coat of vynil spray

Can you give me a bit more info on This vynal spray Joel ?? Is it a cleaner or paint ??
The head liners in very good condition..
Also do you guys have any prefered ways on cleaning all the seat vinyl and rubbers around the door edges etc ?
Shes in for a big clean tonight !!

Its a spray paint for vinyl.
I did my headliner with it nearly 10 years ago and it still looks the same now
supposedly good for all the interior like seats, door panels, dash etc
I used it on my dash but dont think id go as far as seats
I just use the motospray stuff, you can get it from supercheap

As Joel says, it's just damp staining accumulated over the years.
You won't get rid of it altogether, but you can greatly reduce it by gently rubbing the area with laundry bleach. Use a wettex and a half-bucket of
water. Wear old clothes because when it drips on your shirt it will make the colours run. Leave the bleach on for half an hour, then wipe off with
soap and water. The discolouration should be much less. Repeat several times if you wish.
The vinyl spray is the next step, if cleaning doesn't work. It's just a spray paint for vinyl, so it's flexible. You can get it in white and a
variety of other colours. You can get it at Repco, Supercheap, AutoOne, etc etc. Bunnings used to stock it but don't any more. As it's paint,
you'll have to mask everything else. It does wear off after a while.
You can also buy good vinyl-cleaning products at your local auto super store. I like the spray-on foam cleansers, which you can then scrub gently with
a stiff nylon brush and rinse off. Small bathroom brushes are good.
Rubbers are just cleaned with soap and water. Once clean you can give them a wipe with Armorall or similar.

armour all all purpose cleaner, spray on and use soft toothbrush. was told to me by others and it works a treat

One important thing I forgot to mention, when you're cleaning it dont apply too much pressure especially in the center sections where it runs through
the bows
As it's not against the roof turret it's easy to stretch old vinyl and end up with wrinkles.

Be extremely carefull if you decide to try to clean the material . The staining is from the spray adhesive from the factoy during the installation
finally bleeding through the material . I would suggest a light wipe over with thinners or a wax and grease remover and hit it with some vinyl paint
as suggested . The material is old and as it may feel soft to touch it will be very brittle and therefore easy to put your fingers or hand through .

Vice.That stain is actually overspray of the glue the factory used when fitting the headlining. It's on the underside of the headliner and therefore
doesn't clean off. As the glue ages it yellows.
If you're thinking of vinyl spraying a headliner there are two things to consider. One is if the headliner is perforated, paint will fill some of the
perforations depending on how thick the paint goes on. Vinyl dyes are thick so you'll have some areas that will look non perforated or smooth. Number
two is if the headliner is 'Black dot' material where the dots in the headliner are actually printed onto the vinyl. Paint that and you have the
same problem as issue number one.
If the headliner is nice, enjoy the patina. It's just a symptom of an old VW.
If you want a nice gentle cleaner to clean any part of your interior, try this http://www.doubledauto.com.au/vinyl-cleaner/
You will clean any dirt on your headliner with it and it's great for your seats and door cards. If you've got a black dot headliner just try a
section first.
