There's some very fatal-looking crashes in there, and I don't just mean writing off the car.

Beetles have relatively good crashworthiness compared with other small cars of their era. If I was going to have a crash in a small car from the 60s I would definitely prefer to be in a VW rather than a Mini or a Fiat 500.
