What exhaust? Side winder or high mount
Guys I am after an exhaust for my soon to be finished supercharged 1916.
I need something that does not stick too far aft else I wont make it up my drive way without scraping up the header at the 5 oclock bolt hole
position.
Q. Does the A1 Side winder shown here
https://www.classicveedub.com.au/cvd_new/part_detail.aspx?parts_id=16618
stick out less aft than the merge system shown here:
https://www.classicveedub.com.au/cvd_new/part_detail.aspx?parts_id=16613
If anyone has pictures of their installs of the side winder please share!
I am after how far aft the lowest point on the exhaust stick past the rear engine tinware.
Also which of the two is quieter?

Personally I'd pick the sidewinder for 2 reasons:
1. It should have better clearance.
2. It has better performance potential as essentially it's a merged header mounted sideways and as your putting this on a supercharged 1916 you
don't want to restrict it.

can't be genuine A1 for that price!
the sidewinder type will give more clearance for turning up a steep drive.

pipe lengths are the same, flanges are the same, welds are the same quality, collector is the same length and has the same internal cone inside, and
the slip joints are in the same place.............so what is the difference in the quality (apart from the stainless grade) ?

How quiet are these sidewinders, quieter than 2 x hotdogs? reason I have the hot dogs is for ground clearance but the sidewinder seems to be up higher
than the bottom of the sump. How far do they project behind the pully?

Hi
I put a set on my sons bug, I was running a filter pump, I couldn't get it work so I had to change pumps. The other thing that give me the shits is
that I cant get the motor out with them on, so to remove the motor for a simple job the rear part of the system needs to be removed.
I've heard people say that they are very noisy, I'm running a 2 dozen can muffler I got from Westy, its reasonable.
I see on VW060 got rid of the "patented dust maker" good idea.

That has a deep sump on it, so the exhaust sits lower than the standard sump. Not good for a buggy

I see that but my buggy isn't your normal buggy, it has a deep sump and is dropped d

low but I do have a
tow bar that, on closer inspection, may stop me fitting one of these systems, may need to take a trip to see George to check it out.

The reason yours hit is because your using the muffler for the Kombi, not the one for a beetle. The Kombi muffler sits out towards the wheel more
(about 30-40mm)

Not the case at all , the ford caliper is mounted a long way inboard, the exhaust is the correct one for the beetle

The "beetle muffler" for the sidewinder exhaust has the inlet on the right and the outlet on the left (under the car). Your muffler has the inlet on
the left and the outlet on the right (opposite) which puts the muffler out towards the wheel and brakes more. That muffler is designed for being used
on a Kombi
I had the same problem with mine on the ragtop.........until I realised I had the wrong muffler !
Have a look at the below muffler and compare it with yours.

It's not a side winder, it's one i got from george, if it was not for the brake caliper it would have gone straight on even with the eight inch
rims.

The style is called a 'sidewinder'. George's are an exact copy of the A1 system......trust me, I have both. The beetle muffler will clear ALL disc
brake setups (including Ford, skyline, CB etc).
My 1st muffler was the same as yours, and it hit my rear calipers. I replaced it with the beetle muffler, and had no probs with clearance
Below link was the 1st muffler I had, bought from george and being the same as yours.
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=78206#pid727497
Anyway, yours is all soughted now.....so all is good !
