Front wheel bearing discrepancy Jan '68
Hi Guys, beetle BJ 68
I am picking up some parts tonight and short of pulling my disc apart to check the bearing does anyone have an answer for this?
The car is stamped on the tunnel with 10.1.68, and someone suggested a need a certain size of wheel bearing for early 68 bugs... I haven't seen any
write up about it otherwise. Can someone tell me if i need different front wheel bearings on my 10.1.68 bug, or just get standard TB BJ front wheel
bearings????
Cheers

Hi
There is a few different wheel bearings for the 1500 bugs, particularity if stub axles have been swapped. Its better if you can get the bearings out
and compare numbers.
Are you sure that stamping is correct? VW stamped the chassis number, not a date.

Yep, best to check, I think the different stub also has the smaller tie rod end shaft diameter, like an early, with a 17mm nut, instead of the 19mm on
most later cars.

Hi
I've never seen a date stamped like that on a beetle..
but it is the way they did them at the factory...
was the number covered over???
Going by chassis numbers ...
the wheel bearings for My beetle
made in May 1968 in Germany...
are:
LM11749 -10 CUP & CONE TAPERED [LM11749-LM11710]
L45449-10 CUP & CONE TAPERED [L45449-L45410]
SEAL -- 402789N
I JUST FOUND I HAVE WRITTEN DOWN... from 3-68> on??
but I have those same numbers written in My books...
I believe that seal is the correct one for My chassis number
but looking thru VW sites... and collecting numbers... lol
I have also written down VW part numbers:
311 405 625 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 311 405 625 end_of_the_skype_highlighting cup and cone 68 only????
INNER Bearing
311 405 645 cup and cone common till 1977 Outer Brg
oil seal either ---------
131 405 641A or 111 405 641B ??
the seals changed thru the year... not sure on ID or OD..??
cheers
LEE
PS: Your chassis number should start with 118 XXX XXX
the Xs being numbers.. Lee
PPS: I see the number was under the seat belt arm on the tunnel.... under the tar stuff..

Hi again,
Yes, the early cars used a tar based noise protection
and the later ones used a rubber type...
I personally, wouldn't sand blast the date off.... lol
You could weld a plate over it.... lol
the chassis number is under the rear seat near the oval plate
not many people have the date stamped in their car...
normally We use the date on the back of the speedo..
but You will need the chassis number for the wheel bearings
and seal..
1968 model beetles were made from 1st august 1967
to 31st july 1968 - this is the VW model year... for 1968..
cheers

Not in Australia they weren't Lee. We didn't get 1968 Beetles until March 1968. The 1967 Australian Deluxe was made (and sold) until March 1968,
while the 1967 Standard was made right up to September 1968.
That could be a CKD paint stamp, indicating when the frame component was completed in Germany. It would then have been shipped to Australia in crates
with all the other parts (12 crates held parts for 8 cars), freighted to Clayton then unpacked, assembled, painted and sold. It probably wasn't
completed for 3 or 4 months after that date.
Australia had a mix of fully-imported and CKD-assembled models in 1968. The manual was CKD-assembled from mid-'68, while the semi-auto remained fully
imported.
