74 Beetle tyre width???
Hey guys,
I’m not sure about this but my beetle is rego'd in VIC and all the mods are legal and what not but I HAVE to transfer the rego to either NSW or QLD
but the only problem is I don’t have the standard tyres/rims on the car. I’m running 12" wide on the rear and 8" wide on the front. Yeah I know
its huge but that’s the way it’s been for the past 20 years and I’ve had no issues.
I see heaps of old beetles at shows that have pretty wide tyres but I need to know where to go to get it mod plated or get an engineers certificate.
Any ideas?

Hi
Its not the tyre size its wheel size that they go on. Even with a engineers report 7 is all you can go on any Beetle made after January 1973. Pre 73
it goes on the finished weight of the car. This is all according to NSW rules, I think QLD is maybe more easy going.
Just because it been passed for many years doesn't mean it was ever legal.

Ohh ok, well ive got a spare set of wheels/tyres which are legal (according to the engineer I spoke to). Guess I could get it rego'd then change the
tyres back over to the larger ones. Dont really want to get busted though aye

Hi
You should look into QLD rules then if QLD rego is an option.
2 sets of wheels is a bit dodgy, I don't want to sound like the fun police but if something goes wrong and unapproved wheels are on the car your
insurance could be cancelled.

In Queensland you are only allowed 1" over track which limits the width of the rim that you can use anyway, you will get away with a 7" rim at a
roadworthy but if you go over the pits they will measure your vehicle's track and the wheels on your car would be way over the inch increase, what
size tyre's are on your car?

Hi
NSW has the same 1 inch over track rule, you must widen your wheels to keep the track under control.

Oh ok, I get what you guys are saying now. So I cant use the wide tyres/rims because the widest I can have are 7". Well thats a shame, will have to
keep the wide ones for when I take it to the shows then
