Locking Your Car at Service station getting fuel
this is another Law that can be used on Us poor motorists by the Highway Patrol in NSW if they want more revenue...
car must be locked with windows nearly all the way up..
If there are kids in the car.. they must be taken with You...
its illegal to lock them in the car....
Now someone who fills Your car up with fuel - like in the old days - then takes the money and gives change....
will make a fortune if these rules are activated..
[they were in Singleton NSW early last year]

Lee,
Last time I bought fuel and left the car unlocked, a few local kids played a prank and filled it up with a stink bomb.
It is easier to lock it.

You're Two feet away at most. And if they play a prank, check the CV and report the little buggers!!!

I think two metres away from Your car and You are by law required to lock it..
with windows up etc.. in NSW..
or at least put the alarm on.... lights flash..
this is easy with a remote....
with keys a headache...
many country people get out of their car ute 4wd to open gates every day...
so they don't automatically put windows up and lock their vehicle...
many still leave the keys in the car....
its still a different world in the country...

another Law broken quite frequently in the country...
outside Woolworths or Coles on a 40C degrees day You will find a 4wd usually with kids sitting in it with the engine and air conditioner going....
while the driver is inside woolies or coles..
windows are up... doors locked ??
engine going - kids inside.... would be illegal...
I see this all the time...
LEE
PS: My daughter in law had the engine going, air con on and got out of the car [parked on a hill] to see a friend for a minute... ??
grandson got out of the back door, got into the front moved the gearlever to reverse ... a tree stopped the car going into the house... by wrecking
the door.... Lee

Wouldn't that be great - young kids hanging around the pumps, getting in the way, creating conjestion, at risk of being hit by other cars etc.
hazards all round.
I do lock my car when filling up, especially if there's anything of value inside it. I'm paranoid of someone doing the wrong thing while I go inside
to pay (even though I have an immobiliser). Fortunately I don't have kids (for many other reasons besides).
My next car will have central locking.

Always wondered about that central locking thingie, thinking about the layout of a car the most central thing that you could lock would be the gear
stick, spose that's what gets locked then.

I;ve often left the bug sitting at the bowser with keys still in the ignition, not usually on purpose though.
there wouldnt be many people out there stupid enough to steal something as stand outish as a modified beetle
especially in a rural town like here, everyone in the area knows my bug anyway

Well i guess I could say that is why i don't live in NSW nor ever want to. LOL
I usually take the keys out of my cars at the servo just so that some of my mates don't decide to play some of their outlandish pranks they have been
known to do.
As for my Kombi try your hardest kids as my ignition barrel is worn and simply turning the key won't start the car hehehehehe

I undo my fuel cap, then lock the car with a key (its a ford, central lock dont work), then fill up, then pay, then come back and unlock and drive
away. Its no problem at all. I've been doing this since before it was law. You never leave the kids in the car. My sister let the car handbrake off
when she was little and it rolled into traffic. Potential fatality. Another time she was playing with the cigarette lighter. Burnt her leg badly. But
what if she dropped it and the car caught fire? Fatality. What if the car is stolen in the 30 seconds you are paying for fuel and your kid is in the
car. Happens a lot. What if theif crashes your car doing a runner? So many bad things could happen.
Or you can always use a servo that lets you pay at the pump and not worry about it if locking your car is an inconveniance.

I have always locked my car when refuelling and going to pay. The couple of seconds it takes to lock and unlock saves a lot of headache of someone
trying to pinch your car with a full tank of fue,l driving off with it, and then setting it alight or taking it for a very long joy ride.
It's an unfortunate part of today's life that we have to lock everything up.
