Topline MAXX Struts


Is anyone using these? I have a 1302 & I want to drop the front. I can land them in OZ for $629 which is a fairly reasonable I would think. Is there an alternative that is availabe in Australia? Thanks.

I've had them on my bug for a few years now.

Are you planning on running wide wheels?
if not then theres just standard coil adjustables available in aus which are alot cheaper.
or for the narrow coil Richard at V-force also makes a nice strut.

Maxx are good value my only gripe with them is the spring rate is a bit pissy, but I'm getting some Porsche 125lb coils to fix that prob.

oh and the ride height
what height you thinking of running cos they are fairly low
This is my bug on the highest setting, only goes down 5" from there.
Bloody thing would be sitting on the ground :crazy:

yeah there is an alternative, vforce makes a set that they will adjust the spring rate for you. they are a little more than those though

They look good value

I also run V Force struts

The V Force strut is more comparable to the MAXX-Xtreme

MaXX Extreme, 71-73 Super, (includes springs, no shocks) 510.00
MaXX Struts, 71-73 Super, pair (includes springs and shocks) 459.95

The Extreme do not include shocks - guessing that would add a couple hundred $$ to the price of the basic Maxx

All depends what you are after

I really like the german look so big wide wheels are a must, and that ride height looks good. I did look at the V-Force units but like you said they were considerably more. When you talk about spring rate, is the ride choppy or sloppy?

Ahhhhh.......you need to be VERY carefull

The Topline rate their springs at 30lbs
V Force at 130lbs

They are totally different
I have had TOO MANY arguements on SBO to give a toss
USA rates are softer
QED

My L bug has 130lbs King springs ( V Force)
T3 torsion bars on the rear with KYB shocks

Shaken - not stirred

I would describe the ride as VERY similar to my mates Lotus Elise
It is certainly FIRM - but not unruly, unpleasant or uncontrolled

They are abit soft for my liking, but I like very firm suspension so they might be fine for most people.

Barry, not sure where you got those figures?

According to Jon Stock springs are 55-60lb, Maxx ones are 70lb and his eXtreme springs are 80lb


I reckon based on that 100-125lb would suit me.

iv egot the same as barry but with different springs and mine are 3 bolt, mine are one spring set thats just softer than barrys twin spring set. ( a load spring with a pre loader spring or helper just to keep tension on it)
ive also had a set of lowered springs that were just the bottom cups moved, and the ones i have now give a better ride. just got to do the rear end now, got the parts. just need the time.

might also be worth mentioning the v-force ones have original mounting bits for speedo cable & brake lines, if that makes any difference to you
im also one with V-force gear, personally i like the idea of having them easily tweaked to what i need by rich when the cars actually finished, the adjustable camber/caster tops arent half bad either :tu:

I'd highly advise if you're going lower than 3" to get a lowered sway bar and a flip-it/bumpsteer kit

Castor goes out the window and plays hell with the control arm bushes with a stock sway bar once you drop below 3"

OK so there are arguments either way, I would also be using the 3 bolt setup & do like the idea of the upper camber/castor adjustability.
Joel what have you done about speedo/brake mounting point? Did you weld some tabs on or are holding these items another way?
Do the V-Force struts offer the same drop as the topline (up to 5 inches)? I know you could buy lowered spring but that would make the ride even firmer or are the spring rates adjusted to compensate?
The Topline strut is the same spring for the range of drop if I'm reading correctly? I think the V-Force struts will be around double the price before inserts which make them pretty expensive. Is the build quality and materials used much different? Thanks for all the input, keep it coming please.

I have the topline struts, pretty much everything relevant has been said here allready. If your looking at serious track work then Vforce or similar might be worth the extra $$$ but im quite happy with the toplines for my application (daily driver when its running....) My only gripe is like joel said they are too low, I have them installed on the highest setting. Another option if your a bit of a DIY'er is to make your own coilovers, I think some honda civic parts can be used? vdubengineering site has some info I believe.

The MaXX struts come with a bolt on clamp that holds the rigid brake lines to the struts.
That said mine are still sitting on the bench on the to-do one day list. Speedo cable is also fine without the holder.
I have cut a speedo cable holder off a stock strut I'll weld on one day though.

I went this way about 7-8 years ago before all these narrow coil struts really hit the main stream market.

Its rear struts of an EF civic hatch or CRX that work well.
Although being so old not many wreckers are keeping them anymore

I played around trying to get the perfect spring rate also trying suzuki springs and some Tein coil overs but in the end got the tried and tested Maxx struts.

I cant speak highly enough of the V Force struts. I fitted them to my 75 L Bug, with rack and pinion. I was having fun driving it around town, then one day I took it for a drive on the back roads up in the hills.
I was grinning for hours after that drive, the car performed as good as anything I have driven.
