The Mega List of best V-dub roads before you kark it!
Off the top of your head, list off some of the best roads you've ever driven in Australia.
May they be scenic, exciting, extraordinary, isolated or just plain fantastic because of any other reason. Don't worry if it's already been listed,
say it again Sam to support those who have already listed it.
I'll kick off with a couple but I'm really keen to read what others people post.

Great idea for a thread TheBronze!
I've got a couple for Sydney people, out to Hornsby, Galson Gorge, up the Bells line road across to Katoomba back to the city, great Sunday drive.
Also a shorty but a goodie, onto the Sydney Harbour bridge from south to north from Hyde park, over circulat Key, Cahill express way I think it's
called. Slow the traffic or wait for a quiet time then gun it around the spiral up onto the bridge, that corner is awesome and better still the engine
noise is trapped, hard reving Veedub music to my ears!
Gotta few more, have to think about it.

The Oxley highway from Wauchope (near Port Macquarie) to Walcha (or even right through to Moonbie on the New England Hwy).
I have just found another - I am working at Orange and go back & forth to Port Macquarie of a weekend and have been using Bells Line of Road (damn
good fun, but so much of it is 80 k), but last weekend (after talking to a bloke in Orange) I took a short cut from Bathurst, through Sofala, Kandos,
Bylong, and to Denman.
What a top drive - all sealed (mostly very good surface) - lots of long sweeping, undulating country broken up with short winding sections over ridges
(one great section with about half a dozen 25 k corners), best views of farmland, rocky ridges, rivers - and nearly all 100 k. Abuot 2 1/2 hours of
the best fun you can have in a bug with your pants on. So look forward to my trips back and forth of a weekend - 8 hrs each way.

Great Ocean Road, from Lorne to Warrnambool in Victoria is my all-time favourite. Great sweeping curves and tight bends, undulating in and out of rain
forest and along the coast.
Barrier Highway between Broken Hill and Adelaide. Some may say "boring", but I say so what. Not too straight, and the change in landscape defies
belief.

Obi Obi Creek road (west to east, uphill), plus lots of other in the sunshine coast hinterland. Should get my notes from the suncoast rally out....
there is one that drops of the east side of mt mee, we ran it and it was a awesome bit of twisty road.
Also the road from rathdowney to Urbenville......
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

What used to be the worst pacific highway blackspot between syd and bris before the freeway opened is one of my favorites.
If you have a car that corners like it's on rails the Burringbar range is a blast.
I've got a vid somewhere getting my zoom zoom on that I never bothered uploading to youtube giving the bug some shit through there
The highway patrol still haunt it though as all the bike groups love to use it as a race track

oh yeah burringbar range is great,used to punt that road every day when i worked at stokers. joel you should also try the road between ocean shores
and mullumbimby called tunnel rd, its a blast! bit rough but makes you work for it!!!! down my way there are plenty of great roads, one of the best is
from bright to mt beauty, its about 25kms of twists and turns on a lovley surface, plenty of bikes but they all get real big eyes when im headind
there way!!!!!!!

scenic, all conditions and amazing for a daily thrash.

Up the hill you need plenty of horses, Down the hill, 36hp will be OK.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

I've been meaning to go back there, only done it once about 12 years ago in a toyota hiace work van so it wasnt much of an experience

this is a cool thread 
althought i havent driven the following roads in a dub, i plan to...
The drive up to O'reilys, the drive to the Natural Arch, and there is a cool drive that you drive along side the wivenhoe dam all withing an hour or
2 of brisbane... my beetle should be on the road by mid feb and i plan on driviing the wheels off the thing

Mount Panorama, Bathurst.
Probably my most exiting drive in a stock 40hp Beetle was in the Armsrong 500, 1963. 500 miles flat out all day around Bathurst - great fun!
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Great Ocean road is my all time Favorite done it on push bike motor bike and beetle and while doing that Skeens Creek Rd and back down Wild Dog Rd,
Wow !
Joel I agree Burringbar Range great except the speed cameras spoil the fun.
Thunderbolts Way a ripper Then try going in to Nowendoc and back
down to Mt George gravel but Sensational scenery.
Last but not least the 20KM of the old Pacific Hwy just north of Bulahdelah over O'sullivans Gap no traffic no cops good road surface what else do
you want (and its the same distance as the freeway)

So your from Tronta, then get into Newie and do the King Edward run, short and real sweet specialy if you can do it early in the morning and do it
from the bottom like you used to be able to do (before the big rock episode) and if you can go through the cutting even better, watch the cops though,
they don't look kindly on people doing the run. 
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

I would have to agree Daimo except go all the way to Ebor instead of stopping at Dorrigo
Did this road HEAPS while at Uni in Armidale going between Coffs; pretty fun in the bug even going up hill you would be surprised at what the 1300
could do; so long as it wasn't a long sustained climb.
(Thunderbolts is pretty good though too; again going between Armidale and Sydney whilst at Uni)

one of my favourite all time drives is the drive from Queenstown to Wanaka through the crown range. never done it in a dub, but it's on my list.
there's up's, downs, twists, turns and plenty of romm to stretch the legs.
Dubbyfan - the Cahill onto the bridge sth-nth is amazing. ED to the expressway behind circular quay then into the tunnel and around onto the bridge.

Damn Phill, why didn't you post this yesterday - I was tossing up whether to go that way or the freeway from Rutherford (where I dropped my grand
daughter off) to Wilberforce (where I had to pick up building materails) yesterday afternoon. I was tight on time to get to Orange early enough to get
my room key before the pub closed, so I went the freeway because I knew how long it would take.

You did the right thing Jeff, the Putty Rd needs about 3 hours (161 km) to enjoy properly.
If you're in a hurry, best stick to the freeway, especially if there are beers at the other end !
Back in the early '80s I seized the old motor in my '64 Beetle on the Putty Rd, about 10km the other side of Colo Hts. Locked it solid. I had to
walk all the way back and phone for a tow truck, and I remember having to cool my heels for hours by the side of the road. Still a nice drive though!

I am only staying at the pub for accommodation, not really drinking there. I come back Sunday nights so I can be on site at 7am Mondays to open the
site & start work.
I still intend to try the road though - better hurry up - I only have about 4 weeks left in Orange I think.

Lockharts Gap Rd in the high country of Vic, hope you have your suspension and brakes sorted, some of the best hairpins I've ever found, and Eskdale
