Volkswagen at Nurburgring
This is the Golf GTI '24' that VW will be racing at the Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race in June.
This VW Motorsport-built vehicle features a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine (from the Audi TT RS), tuned up to develop 324kW of power and 540 Nm of
torque. It will use VW's 4Motion 4WD system.
Normally VW has raced CNG-fueled Sciroccos at this race (they have won their class the last couple of years) but this year VW is entering Golfs to
celebrate the 35th anniversary of the GTI.
You can also see a short clip of it on YouTube (it sounds like an Audi quattro!)

Supposed to be 1970 even though that cabriolet is a 71 super and the yellow bug with black hoods is an Lbug.
What get's me is the amount of people who get ejected from the cars clearly not wearing any form of seatbelt.
Woman in the BMW 2002 nearly gets decapitated at 0:30secs, bet she had a headache after that.
Sorry for the Hijack Phil.

Is this a bit of bad temper that Subaru aren't in international motor sport any more?
Don't diss new VWs. Maybe you haven't watched the Sciroccos win their class at this event the last two years. Or watched Audi win Le Mans eight
tiomes in the last ten years. Or VW win the Dakar rally the last three years straight. Or Audi win the Bathurst 12-hour this year.

These are the results of the Nurburgring 24-hour race last year:
1st overall was E1 class BMW M3 GT2, 154 laps. Winner of the SP class and second overall was a Ferrari F430 GTC, followed by an Audi R8 and a BMW Z4.
Winner of the AT class and 16th overall was the Volkswagen Scirocco GT-24 CNG, 143 laps.
The only Subaru (which competed in the SP Sports Prototype class) finished 24th, 15 laps down and 4 laps behind the stock bodied Volkswagen.
Maybe the Subaru caught fire, then continually broke down again and again and again ....

What would my comment have to do with Subaru?
I will Diss new Vw's. From my own personal experiences & hearing many other owners of new vw's comments/experiences as well, they are rubbish.
Period. If it wasn't for the fact that I had an extended manufacturers warranty I would be screwed. Simple. Even then, VW make u feel as though it's
all the owners fault, even when a car has a full service history from new with VW. When my wife is driving with the kids in a $40k+ VW & it
catches on fire, I will say they are shit. When the tow truck driver picks up said Jetta from my house again & again, or from the side of the road
again & again & he tells me to not feel so bad as I"m not alone, I will say they are shit. Beautiful car & we love(?) our Jetta, but they
are shit. Ours should be painted Yellow.
When a tow truck driver knows u by your first name, u know you have a Lemon.
As for your comments on VW success in motorsport, thats awesome, I am a VW head through & through, regardless of what powers my beetle, (I'm not
at all interested in Subaru motorsport) but that success is pretty irrelevant to new Vw's on the street. Particularly when they are on the side of
the road seeing if their emergency flashers work. They do which is a bonus!

Sorry to hear those experiences, but new VWs are not rubbish. Period. Just because yours has failed doesn't mean they are all like that - if they
were then VW's Australian sales would not be increasing 20+% per year as they are. VW sold more cars in Australia last year than ever before, and
this year's sales are already up on last year's. If they were all lemons like you say, that wouldn't happen.
Obviously yours has a serious problem. Catching fire would be enough to demand a replacement vehicle. Did you front the dealer and demand it be fixed
NOW or you'll see Consumer Affairs - or a Current Affair? Did you tell him you're in a VW Club and will report their lousy service to the
members?
But you can't tar them all with the same brush. I personally know four people with Jettas less than 3 years old and they are fine. The Jetta again
won one of the NRMA's Best car awards last year. We have a new VW Nationals watercooled judging category this year for 'Best VW Sedan' as we had
plenty of them on show last year. I agree that the Australian dealer chain needs a lot of work. Almost all of them are dealers of other makes and are
taking on VWs because they are popular and hence make them money. There's no 'VW soul' there. Poor dealer stories are very common, and they need a
kick up the bum. Dealers like McGraths, Denlo, Nepean, Wakeling etc etc have sold and serviced other makes for years, and now they're suddenly VW
dealers too. How could you be assured they now know anything about VWs? And know how to service and repair them properly?
But that doesn't mean the product itself is bad - it's not.
People say old air-cooled VWs are crap because they catch fire and roll over. They do - but does that make them rubbish? Richard Hammond says the
Beetle is one of the worst cars ever made. Is he right?
I expected VW 'enthusiasts' on this site to be interested in an upcoming VW factory race car that makes 435 hp, competing at the world's best
endurance race for production/sports cars. One where VW won their class last year and did NOT break down. Oh well.

Well we can agree to disagree.
& I apologise for hijacking your post on what looks like an awesome golf which I am genuinly interested in.
But, all of your suggestions above were done re my Jetta, & then some, trust me. VW basically laughed at me. A replacement vehicle, thats
hilarious! I just had the car in for it's 65'000k service it has very low k's & does less k's than my beetle. I had to wait 3 weeks for a
booking because of, in the dealers words "warranty servicing" & when we brought our car in that there would be no courtesy cars because all 9
were being used. Anyway I digress, 24 hours after a $360 oil change, it was on the side of the road again...................just checking to see if
the hazard lights work. Sorry mate but car of the year awards make
great headlines & nothing else
The car is now gone last week & I have bought my wife a (I shudder to say it) Ford Mondeo Zetec Turbo Diesel wagon ( I can't beleive I own a
F*&king Diesel) I really really wanted a Golf Wagon, just to give VW another chance ( I really wanted to but my wife refused) & after reading
& having it confirmed to be by a North Shore dealer that VW have brought 100 new TSI (Turbo & Supercharged) Golf engines into the country for
warranties as they are blowing holes in pistons left right & centre because the engine of the year can't handle our fuel (allegedly, apparently)
Don't see that in the glossy magazines do we? So, hence the Ford, I'll give the Belgians a go as the Mexicans have lost my buisness.
When I was out on the road bike at lunch time today, I saw a guy on the other side of the F3 in a new Golf, that just pulled over to see if his hazard
lights were working. he was frantically waving his hands in the air
obviusly a little upset. i thought, yep, feel your pain brother. Feel your pain.

Oh & Phil, my wifes Jetta caught on fire the day the 3 year warranty was up, with 45'000ks on the clock, so tell your 4 friends if their Jettas
suddenly catch fire at the 3 year mark, DO NOT put the fire out, let the F*&ker burn to the ground.

Yes this really deserved its own thread. Never mind, good to clear the air.
It sounds like you got screwed by the dealer - your first post implied it caught fire FIRST (ie almost new) then broke down several times after that.
But you got 3 years and 45,000 km out of it first - that suggests to me that at was poorly/sloppily serviced and something wasn't done properly. Not
poorly designed/built - otherwise it would have happened sooner, and EVERY Jetta would be doing that. They ain't.
Did you try another dealer? Did you speak with Karl Gehling or even Anke Koeckler at VWA? They sponsor the Nationals and have been very approachable
to us - there's no reason why they couldn't give that shonky dealer a good kicking. Anke Koeckler, the currect VWA MD, used to be the VW dealer
manager for all of northern Germany and used to visit dealers anonymously to check their standard of service. She would like to hear of your
experience I'm sure - and you can name names. A three week wait, and no courtesy car, is just plain slack, on top of the poor service. Was it 'VW'
(Mascot) or your local dealer that 'laughed at you'? If he's the one on Mann St Gosford, he's only been a VW agent since 2003 and would, in my
opinion, have diddly squat idea of how a real VW dealer should be. I bet their pimply apprentice did your pre-3 year service and left one of the fuel
hoses loose. Really, he's spoiled your VW experience and I don't believe it's the car's fault. Too late to convince your wife now...
I wonder how many people are putting cheap crap E10 into their high-tech TSI engines? The motor prefers expensive 98 but have been certified for
mid-price 95 from the start of last year. It's not hard to imagine slackness creeping in after 3,6,12 months of ownership when she's running so
well. Hey look, it also runs OK on 91 E10, and it's 10c cheaper! For a while anyway - until it goes wrong and then it's the bloody VW's fault?!
Shit new VWs! And no, I haven't seen it in the glossy magazines because 100 engines covers the idiot factor and it's not really news. I wonder how
many people are also putting petrol into their TDIs because they go so well they forget? A bit like people putting water into T3 wasserboxer cooling
systems instead of the factory-recommended coolant (that costs $$) then later complaining about head stud corrosion. Bastards!
If you saw a Golf broken down by the side of the road today - did you ask him where he bought it, or had it serviced last ? Is it the same as your
dealer? If so, is it still the car's fault?
I disagree about your dismissal of the car awards. If it was just one you could probably disregard. But the Golf in 2009, and the Polo last year, won
them ALL.

Again Phil , sorry, but I am being preached to by someone who hasn't experienced what i have. I am a massive vw head, hence I bought a modern vw to
be parked next to my beetle. But I can't do it again.
To brag that my $40k Jetta had a "few" good years just doesn't cut it. & When my wife would prefer to go somewhere in the 40 year old Beetle
over the $40k Jetta, u know somethings wrong LOL.
I really don't blame the dealer, or the poor bastard behind the front desk who I have abused time & time again, I know it's not his fault. They
didn't build the car. i even had one of the tow truck drivers park the car in front of the door at the dealer so they couldn't get in first thing
monday morning made me feel good for a few minutes knowing that
someone else had been inconvenienced by our Jetta. But again, I have mellowed now & put it all down to experience.
I even talked my best mate who races beetles with me to get a Jetta as his company car. Whilst he has yet to be stuck on the side of the road, he has
had lots of niggling electrical faults, I hope he never calls me from the side of the road! our friendship may be over!
I know of Jettas & Golfs in Sydney & in Melbourne that have caught alight (one of which in Melbourne burnt to the ground) because of the Coil
packs (like mine) & they are now being changed at their next service intervals, why VW are waiting is beyond me? so that it's not in the media as
a recall? maybe.
As for your comments about the fuel, u can't put petrol in a diesel car, it's impossible to do, even for an idiot.
Sorry for killing your original thread Phil, it's just now everytime I see a new vw I instantly think "that will break down". When the dealer says,
"Sorry Mr. Rizzo, but I can't guarantee that it won't happen again" it doesn't install much confidence.
I have Tar & I have a brush. Sorry VW, but u don't make them like u used to..................If only that fire didn't go out. If only.

Jak, I think you've misinterpreted a couple of my points, so really there's no point in pursuing this further.
It's natural that you feel strong emotion and anguish after what you've been through, and therefore I can see that you intend blaming your poor
Jetta (and by implication, ALL new VWs), regardless of what I might say. It's a shame you feel that way but there's nothing I can do about it.
Maybe you should post your experiences on the vwwatercooled forum, as the majority of the posters on this forum are air-cooled only. Meanwhile, I
think I'll stop posting new VW news items as no one is interested here.

I wouldn't stop posting new vw news, I for one always look at what u post. I just happen to ruin this post for u.
But I would be incredibly surprised, that even the most hardened vw enthusiast would purchase another new vw after what i have been through. Or think
of them differently to what I now feel towards VW.
What modern vw do u drive & what have been your experiences?

Firstly, I am sorry to break in here, but I recently had a problem with my T5 Transporter - about 100,000km on the odometer.
The T5 would not start, after trying 'everything', so I had it towed to the local VW dealer at Moss Vale.
After a week of 'we can't find the trouble', etc., they finally got it going. I asked if they were in contact with VWA, to get help, and they said
that they were. Even gave them Adrian Muller's mobile no.[sorry Adrian], but they did not contact him!
When I asked [after they had it for a week] "What was the trouble", the reply was;- "We have no idea, it suddenly just started", and gave me a
bill for $714! No pay, no keys.
After much haggling, I finally got to see the dealer principal, who offered to deduct the $714 from a new T5. Needless to say that I will NEVER deal
with them again!!!!!
The T5 - apart from that incident - has been wonderful, and I do not hold any grudges against VW, but I do object to paying $714 for some incompetent
VW workshop, to 'learn' on my car. My involvement with VWs has been a long one - more than 50 years - and I won't let this spoil my otherwise happy
relationship.
Cheers, Greg
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!
