1916 hp ?


Hi guys just had a 1916 built and was wondering if any one else out there would know what sort of horsepower i might expect from it . IT made 86 hp at the tyres yesterday , was hoping for about 100 but maybe i was expecting too much, any help would be appreciated , thanks

Hey welcome to the forum, but man, that's like asking how long is a piece of string !!!

;)

Previous incarnation of my engine was 1916, 8.95:1 compression, 40x35 valves, cam between a Engle 110 and 120, mild porting job, 44 IDF's and it got around 80hp at the wheels.

Current version is still 1915, same case, crank, pistons, barrels but new heads, 11:1 CR, 44x37.5, FK87 cam, wedge ports, tall manifolds, dry sump. Pretty wild all-out-race motor really. With 44 IDF's and various vents, jets etc it's pulled 119, 125 and 132hp at the wheels. Converted to Haltech EFI and that climbed to 142.6hp.

So... depending on what you've got internally, somewhere between 80 and 140 is about right.

What did you ask your builder to build, and what does he expect from it ???

86hp at the wheels should definitely get a bug moving! Don't start to get too disappointed until you've driven it! :D

Before falling for vw's I was a japspec guy and, thanks to publications such as fast fours and rotarys, I thought anything under three thousand horsepower lame.

80+ hp In a Vw will certainly give many people a shock when you plant the go pedal :)

Is this for street or strip?

Power to weight, low gearing and good traction is the VW advantage, like the others have said 85hp at the wheels will make for a quick vw on the street.

I was getting that with my supercharged 1600 and it was a blast to drive, my supercharged 1776 and the subi are good for about 100hp at the wheels and in an overweight Lbug thats makes for 0-100 in 7secs which will make alot of V8s upset.

Doesn't take much to get these little cars cranking, just ask Rose about her 1916 bug embarrassing the V8s at the strip :lol:

yeah at Warwick VW 1/8 mile drags, just about all of the 1916 bugs did 10-11 sec passes

2.0L type 4 in my Kombi with stock CR, 40mm dell's, custom exhaust, ported heads, cam, and lightened flywheel made 79.8hp atw. engine is long in the tooth(365000+km) but it pushed my bus down the 1/8 in 11.35@ 58mph. Bus is a fair bit heavier than a bug so 86hp should be a bit of fun to drive!!

I'd be interested in some specs too... We are currently building a 1916 also. And sides, if they are the heads I have now they are 40x35's..... They have had some work done now though. 42x37.5's would be nice!

There are not very many 100+ HP beetles driving around (regardless of cc capacity) so 86hp should make for a quick street beetle. :tu:

As a comparison: A Pobjoy Base 1916 is around 75-77hp (Kadrons, standard heads etc).In a 800kg beetle you will get down the quarter in 16 flat (high 15's possible) at 80mph. A Subaru liberty with the 3lt 6 cylinder boxer motor and 6 speed will get a 15.7sec...........and yes I have tested this ;)

Don't get caught up with the dyno figure, it really means nothing unless you are using it for measuring a change that you have made or directly comparing it with another car that was run on the same day.

thanks heaps for the replies i'll get all the info on my engine and post it , i can tell you that its got a 110 engle cam empi heads with twin 40mm empi carbs and its in a J&S beach buggy that weighs about 660kgs

My 1916 is 2/10th of second quicker over the quarter mile at Warwick with 96HP from a K8 cam than 99.9 from the previous W130 cam. Go figure.

I've taken my engine from 76, 83, 89, 99 and 96 all with the same block, pistons, carbys and compression. You can make a big difference with the choice of head, choice of cam and getting things like timing, exhaust, inlet manifolds and carbys right. There can be a nice art to squeezing out the horsepower as opposed to cheque book racing. Beside, it provides hours of head scratching entertainment.

86 is pretty good.

The HP figures always depend on which dyno your on

As per above the figure is only a guide and next time you make a change, go back to the same roller and operator to compare your figures

Dont use any other machine or operator

that HP in a buggy will get you anywhere reasonably quick

I'm going racing in Ian's 70 bug can't wait and Andrew in his buggy from newy

I'd be happy with that hp

My best time out of a 1916 on 1/8th mile was a 9.66sec my oval only weighs 687kg and around 65hp

yeah but V8's are slow and heavy. I even flog most V8's up to VT versing me in my V6 VP.

few minor mods the relatively stock engine puts out now around 190-200hp in the one of the lightest commy of all at only 1250Kg. 0-100 in 6.5~ sec. :crazy: used to do 0-100 in 12sec. Don't know what happen there :no: oh only a near complete rebuilt of the car and it still looks like a POS with all the paint looking like used sand paper:lol: It what inside that counts and P/W ratio make a difference.

Most cars are 1700Kg now. ffs a 2001 Hyundai accent weighs more than my commy :no: sad but true
