motor seems tight??....(first post)
Hey guys,
i have a 68 notchback and had the engine rebuilt not long ago.....its only a weekend driver and not done alot since....turn the key and
the motor spins very slow like a flat battery or bad starter motor...i feel its getting worse..ive checked a few things out like bad connections,drop
tests ect..........ive noticed that if i push the clutch in while trying to start,it starts no worries??....has anyone had this problem??....

As above if the problem goes away with the clutch in then the problem is in the gearbox
Checked the gearbox oil level recently?
Hows it drive/shift?

Hi and welcome to AVD
it sounds like You have pressure from Your gearbox which means the clutch needs adjusting .. maybe...
or replacing??
clutch plate is dragging on pressure plate/flywheel ??
jack up the rear, so the rear wheels are off the ground and hand brake OFF ... be careful..
and see if it starts easier... if it does start easier then Your clutch is the problem.. if not.. ??
maybe the transmission oil is too thick??

It may only be that the transmission oil is very cold, and this [combined with a 'new' engine] is causing a lot of drag. Is it a bit cold where you
live? It's bloody freezing at our place at present! Keep depressing the clutch when cranking the engine - unless you are hearing nasty noises.

gearbox oil was the first thing i checked......it does seem to get better when its warmed up...i had the flywheel skimmed when the motor was
being rebuilt but they said the clutch was good to re-run....but il try what lee says this weekend.......
also.....im running a rancho box with a super diff ect..whitch was new when i did the motor,i put a new scat t-bar shifter on and set it up as best as
possible.....gear changing is stiff......should it be??...

Hey,
im 20min drive inland from the goldcoast.........its a 12v system.
I took it for a drive this weekend and had no problems.......didnt get arround to getting my stands underneith and trying that method of yours
lee.....will do soon.

When did you have the box built and when the engine? wondering if problem noticed from engine build or since box build?
If starts easier with clutch in then a box problem unless the clutch not disengaging properly.
What is the comp reading of the cylinders like? If battery and starter are old then good comp will stress the starter system and show the weak point.

Do you have an earth strap connecting the gearbox to the chassis?

I had a similar problem in November - in the end decided it may be the starter motor going. I took it out to get it checked, then found the 2 long
machine screws that hold it together were loose (see photo). I tightened them up and re-fitted it, and haven't had a problem since (touch wood).

Hey...........thanks for your replys....since my first post it has got worse....pushing the clutch in doesnt seem to do much and ive tried what lee
says,still the same......il try what jeff says.......i put the new motor in and the new box at the same time along with a new aftermarket starter
motor and new battery........earth strap to the gearbox is good....once the engine is warm its fine,can stop and start all day no
probs..........fingers crossed loose bolts on the starter!!...
